Your data. Your rules.

A plain-language look at what I collect on Deepak Surya, why, and how you stay in control. Short version: I collect the minimum, I never sell your data, and ads on this site are what keep the tools and articles free.

01. Overview

This Privacy Policy applies to Deepak Surya (thesuryar.com), a blog and collection of free online tools covering money, health, productivity, career, relationships, and a few other corners of everyday life. In this policy, “I,” “me,” and “the site” refer to Deepak Surya, and “you” means anyone who visits the site, reads a post, or uses one of the calculators.

I built this site on my own, so there is no legal team drafting jargon-heavy clauses here — just a straightforward account of what data gets collected, why, and what you can do about it. This policy applies to everyone who visits thesuryar.com, with specific rights called out for users in the EU/UK (GDPR) and India (the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023).

By continuing to use the site, you are agreeing to what is described below. If something here does not sit right with you, the Contact page has my details — reach out and I will do my best to sort it.

02. Information I collect

I try to collect as little as possible. Here is everything that is gathered, and how:

  • Information you provide directly: if you use the Contact page or leave a comment, I get whatever you type in — typically your name, email address, and message.
  • Calculator and tool inputs: the numbers you enter into tools like the Budget Calculator, Compound Interest Calculator, or Password Generator are processed in your browser to give you a result. I do not store or see the actual figures you type in.
  • Analytics data: through Google Analytics, I get aggregated, non-identifying data — pages viewed, session length, approximate location (city/country level), device and browser type, and the site that referred you here.
  • Advertising data: since the site runs ads through Google AdSense, Google and its advertising partners may collect data via cookies to serve and measure ads.
  • Server and security logs: standard technical data like IP address and timestamps, kept briefly for security and to catch spam or abuse.

I do not collect government ID numbers, payment or banking details, or any special category data, and I never ask for more than what a given feature actually needs.

03. How I use this information

Whatever information I do collect is used for a short, specific list of reasons:

  • To reply when you write in through the Contact page.
  • To understand which posts and tools people actually find useful, so I can write and build more of what works.
  • To keep the site running and secure, and to catch spam, scraping, or abuse.
  • To display and measure advertising through Google AdSense, which is what keeps the blog and the calculators free to use.

Where GDPR applies, the legal basis for this processing is either your consent (for example, accepting cookies) or my legitimate interest in running and improving a free site. I do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to anyone, under any circumstances.

04. Cookies, analytics & advertising

This site uses cookies from three main sources:

  • Essential cookies: keep basic site functions working, such as remembering your cookie consent choice.
  • Analytics cookies (Google Analytics): help me understand traffic patterns and content performance in aggregate.
  • Advertising cookies (Google AdSense and its partners): used to serve and measure ads based on your visits to this and other sites, including the standard DoubleClick cookie.

You can turn off personalized advertising through Google Ad Settings, or opt out of third-party vendor cookies via aboutads.info (US) or youronlinechoices.eu (EU). A full breakdown lives on the separate Cookie Policy page.

05. Third-party services & affiliate links

Running the site means relying on a handful of outside services, each governed by its own privacy policy:

  • Google Analytics — traffic and behavior analytics.
  • Google AdSense — serves the ads you see across the site.
  • Google Search Console — helps me monitor how the site performs in search results.

Some posts also include affiliate links. If you click one and make a purchase, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This never changes what I write.

06. Data retention & security

How long things stick around:

  • Contact form messages: kept as long as needed to handle your query, then deleted.
  • Comments: kept indefinitely as part of the public discussion, unless you ask me to remove yours.
  • Analytics and advertising data: retained per Google own retention settings.
  • Server logs: kept briefly on a rolling basis, then automatically overwritten.

I use standard security practices — HTTPS encryption, limited backend access, and up-to-date software — but no website can guarantee data is 100% secure.

07. Children privacy

Deepak Surya is not directed at children, and I do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has shared personal information with this site, please get in touch through the Contact page and I will remove it promptly.

08. Your rights & choices

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, or delete the personal data I hold about you. EU/UK residents have these rights under GDPR; Indian residents have similar rights under the DPDP Act, 2023.

To exercise any of these, reach out via the Contact page. You can also control cookies directly through your browser settings, and opt out of personalized ads through Google Ad Settings.

09. Changes to this policy & contact

I may update this policy occasionally. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated “last revised” date. Continuing to use the site after an update means you are okay with the revised version.

Questions about anything above? The Contact page is the best way to reach me.
