ReadOra — Smart Reading Time Calculator & Text Analyzer
Calculate reading time, speaking time, and listening time for any text. Get instant word count, character count, sentence count, paragraph count, reading difficulty, Flesch-Kincaid grade level, word frequency analysis, and keyword density. Supports plain text input and file upload (TXT, DOCX, PDF).
How it works
- Paste your text, type directly, or upload a .txt, .docx, or .pdf file.
- Choose your reading speed: Slow (100 WPM), Average (200 WPM), Fast (300 WPM), Speed Reader (500 WPM), or set a custom WPM.
- View real-time statistics: reading time, speaking time (130 WPM), listening time (150 WPM), word count, character count, sentences, paragraphs, average word and sentence length.
- Analyze readability: Flesch-Kincaid grade level, reading difficulty (Easy, Medium, Hard, Very Hard), and lexical density.
- Explore word frequency and keyword density charts.
- Export your analysis as PDF, TXT, or JSON, or share via QR code.

How Reading Time Is Calculated
Reading time comes down to one simple ratio: how many words are in the text, divided by how fast a person reads. This tool counts the words in whatever you paste in, then divides that by an average reading speed to give you a realistic estimate — the same basic method Medium and most blogging platforms use to show their "X min read" tags.
Reading time = word count ÷ words per minute (WPM)Example: a 1,200-word article at the average adult silent-reading speed of ~200–250 WPM comes out to roughly 5–6 minutes.
Average Reading Speeds
Reading speed varies a lot depending on the reader and the material — technical or unfamiliar text always reads slower than casual prose:
| Reader / content type | Typical speed |
|---|---|
| Average adult, silent reading | 200–250 WPM |
| Skimming / scanning | 400–700 WPM |
| Reading aloud | 150–160 WPM |
| Technical or academic material | 100–150 WPM |
| Children (early readers) | 60–100 WPM |
Because of this range, any reading-time estimate is a useful ballpark rather than an exact promise — your actual time will shift with focus, familiarity with the topic, and how densely the text is written.
Why This Matters for Writers and Publishers
- Blog posts — showing an estimated read time sets reader expectations and can reduce bounce rate
- Newsletters — helps subscribers decide whether to read now or save for later
- Scripts and speeches — estimating spoken delivery time for presentations or video voiceovers
- Students — planning study sessions around how long assigned reading will actually take
- Editors — trimming content to hit a target reading time for a section or newsletter slot
Frequently Asked Questions
What reading speed does this calculator use?
It defaults to the commonly cited average of around 200–250 words per minute for adult silent reading, which is the same baseline most publishing platforms use for their "read time" estimates.
Does it work for speeches or scripts read aloud?
Reading aloud is noticeably slower than silent reading — typically 150–160 words per minute — so a script's actual delivery time will run longer than a silent-reading estimate suggests.
Why does my actual reading time differ from the estimate?
Reading speed depends heavily on the reader and the material. Dense or technical writing, unfamiliar vocabulary, and distractions all slow real reading time below the calculated average.
Can I calculate reading time from just a word count, without pasting text?
Yes — entering a word count directly gives the same estimate as pasting the full text, since the calculation is based purely on word count and reading speed.
