Overtime Pay Calculator
Find out what your extra hours are really worth before payday arrives. This free overtime pay calculator splits your regular hours from your overtime hours, applies time and a half or double time, removes unpaid breaks, and adjusts your rate when a bonus is involved.
Enter every paid hour. The calculator works out the overtime split for you.
Over 8 hours in a day pays overtime, over 12 hours pays double time. Used in California and in many shift contracts.
Why this overtime pay calculator beats a plain 1.5x formula
Most overtime tools online do exactly one thing. They multiply your hourly rate by 1.5 and stop there. That is fine if you already know how many overtime hours you worked. In real life, however, you rarely do. You know you clocked 47 hours, you took some unpaid lunches, and you picked up one long Saturday shift.
So this overtime pay calculator does the messy part for you. It works out the split, applies the right multiplier to each block of hours, and shows the arithmetic instead of hiding it.
- It splits your hours automaticallyEnter 47 hours and it returns 40 regular plus 7 overtime. No manual subtraction first.
- Daily overtime rulesTurn on the 8 and 12 hour rule used in California and many shift contracts. Almost no rival tool calculates this.
- Double time supportLong days over 12 hours are paid at 2x automatically, kept separate in the breakdown.
- Unpaid breaks removedLog break minutes per day so your lunch never inflates your total by mistake.
- Bonus adjusted regular rateA production or attendance bonus legally raises the rate your overtime is based on. This tool applies that. Competitors ignore it.
- Any currency and thresholdSwitch the symbol, change the weekly threshold from 40 to 45, or pick a 1.25x or 3x multiplier.
In addition, there is no sign-up, no email wall and no ad clutter. Everything runs in your browser, so your pay details never leave your device.
How to use the overtime pay calculator
- Enter your base hourly rate and pick your currency.
- Choose your overtime multiplier. Time and a half is the common default.
- Set the weekly threshold. Federal rules in the United States use 40 hours.
- Add a bonus if you earned one this week, then enter your hours.
- Press calculate and read the full breakdown.
Quick estimate mode
Use this when you simply want a fast number. Type the total paid hours for the week and the tool handles the rest. For example, 47 hours at 22 per hour returns 40 regular hours plus 7 overtime hours at time and a half.
Full week mode
Use this when your days were uneven. You get a row for each day, plus a field for unpaid break minutes. Then you can switch on daily overtime rules if your state or contract pays overtime after 8 hours in a single day. This matters more than people expect. Under daily rules a 10 hour Monday earns overtime even if your weekly total never reaches 40.
How overtime pay is calculated
The core formula is simple:
Overtime pay = regular rate x multiplier x overtime hours
Your total gross is then your regular hours at the regular rate, plus that overtime amount. The part people get wrong is the phrase regular rate. It is not always your base rate. Under the US Department of Labor overtime rules, nondiscretionary bonuses have to be folded back into your hourly figure before the multiplier is applied.
Here is what that looks like. You earn 20 per hour, you work 45 hours, and you receive a 90 attendance bonus. Your regular rate becomes 22 per hour, not 20. As a result your overtime is worth 33 per hour rather than 30. Across 5 overtime hours that is a real difference, and it is the single most common underpayment in hourly work.
Benefits of checking your overtime before payday
- Catch payroll errors early. Miscounted overtime hours are common, and they are far easier to fix before a pay run closes than after.
- Decide if the extra shift is worth it. Seeing the actual number helps you weigh the money against your time and energy.
- Budget with real figures. Overtime weeks distort your income, so plan with the true total rather than a guess.
- Walk into pay conversations prepared. Numbers carry more weight than impressions.
That last point matters. If you are weighing a raise instead of more hours, our guide on how to negotiate a salary offer pairs well with this tool. And if the overtime has become constant rather than occasional, it may be worth reading about workplace burnout and setting boundaries at work.
Overtime pay calculator FAQs
How do you calculate overtime pay?
Multiply your regular hourly rate by your overtime multiplier, then multiply that by your overtime hours. For time and a half, a 20 per hour worker earns 30 per overtime hour. Add that to your regular hours at normal rate to get gross pay.
What is time and a half for 20 dollars an hour?
Time and a half for 20 per hour is 30 per hour. You take 20 and multiply it by 1.5. So 8 overtime hours at that rate would pay 240 before tax.
Is overtime calculated daily or weekly?
Federal rules in the United States use a weekly threshold of 40 hours. Some states, including California, also apply a daily rule that pays overtime after 8 hours and double time after 12 hours in one day. Where both apply, you receive whichever gives the greater amount, not both stacked together. Switch on daily rules in full week mode to model this.
Does a bonus change your overtime rate?
Yes, if it is a nondiscretionary bonus such as a production, attendance or shift bonus. It has to be added back into your hourly figure before the overtime multiplier is applied, which raises your overtime pay. Purely discretionary gifts are generally excluded. This calculator handles the adjustment automatically.
Do lunch breaks count toward overtime hours?
Unpaid meal breaks do not count as hours worked, so they never count toward overtime. Short paid rest breaks usually do count. Enter your unpaid minutes in full week mode so your totals stay accurate.
Is double time required by law?
Federal law does not require double time. It sets 1.5x as the minimum for hours beyond 40 in a week. However, some states and many union contracts do require 2x for very long days or seventh consecutive days, so check your agreement.
Do salaried employees get overtime pay?
Some do. Eligibility depends on whether you are classified as exempt or nonexempt, which rests on your duties and your salary level rather than simply being paid a salary. Nonexempt salaried workers are owed overtime. To use this tool, divide your weekly salary by your normal hours to find your hourly rate first.
Is this overtime pay calculator accurate for taxes?
It shows gross pay, meaning your earnings before deductions. Tax, insurance and retirement contributions come out afterwards and vary by location and personal situation, so your take home figure will be lower.
