Why this converter

Built for the actual question: when can we all meet?

Converting one time to one other zone is the easy part. The hard part is finding an hour that is not the middle of the night for someone — which is what this tool is designed around.

Up to five zones at once

Compare your time against four other cities side by side instead of running the same conversion over and over in separate tabs.

Working-hours overlap strip

A 24-hour bar for each city shows working hours, the edges of the day and the hours that are plainly unreasonable, so a workable slot is obvious at a glance.

Next-day and previous-day flags

Cross the date line and it is easy to book a call for the wrong day. Each city clearly shows when the result lands on a different date.

Daylight saving handled

Offsets are read from your device’s time zone database for the exact date you choose, so a meeting in March or November uses the right offset, not a stale one.

Starts where you are

Your own time zone and the current time are filled in automatically, so most conversions take a single tap on the city you care about.

Private and instant

No account, no ads over the tool and nothing sent anywhere. It works on a phone in a few seconds while you are on a call.

How to use it

How to convert a time zone in four steps

Set your starting point

Your own zone and the current time are pre-filled. Change the city if you are working from someone else’s clock.

Pick the date and time

Use the quick buttons for now, 9am, 2pm or 5pm, or type any date and time you like.

Add your cities

Choose up to four more zones. Add and remove rows as your invite list changes.

Read the overlap

Check each local time, the day difference and the coloured strip to find an hour that works for everyone.

Benefits

Where a one-hour mistake costs the most

Time zone errors are quiet until they are not: a missed interview, a call nobody joins, a flight connection that never existed.

Remote and distributed teams

Find the narrow window where three continents overlap instead of defaulting to whoever shouts loudest.

Job interviews and client calls

Confirm the time in both zones in writing. Turning up an hour late to an interview is rarely recoverable.

Flights and connections

Departure and arrival times are always local, so the number on the ticket is not the length of the flight.

Launches and deadlines

A midnight cut-off means little without a zone attached. Check what it lands on where your users actually are.

Live events and streams

Sport, keynotes and exam results are announced in one zone and watched in dozens of others.

Calling family abroad

Check whether it is a civilised hour before you dial — the overlap strip answers that instantly.

The method

How time zone conversion works

Everything runs through UTC

Every zone is defined as an offset from Coordinated Universal Time. To convert, the local time is turned into the equivalent UTC instant, then that instant is expressed in the target zone. New York in winter is UTC−5, so 09:00 there is 14:00 UTC, which is 19:30 in India at UTC+5:30 — a difference of 10 hours and 30 minutes.

Why you cannot just store an offset

Offsets change. Most of North America and Europe shift by an hour twice a year, the dates differ between countries, and the southern hemisphere moves in the opposite direction. That is why this tool works from named zones such as America/New_York rather than fixed labels like EST, and reads the correct offset for the exact date you enter.

Common time differences

Standard-time offsets from UTC for major cities
CityStandard offsetDaylight saving
Los AngelesUTC−8Yes, UTC−7 in summer
New YorkUTC−5Yes, UTC−4 in summer
LondonUTC+0Yes, UTC+1 in summer
Berlin and ParisUTC+1Yes, UTC+2 in summer
DubaiUTC+4No
IndiaUTC+5:30No
Singapore and ChinaUTC+8No
TokyoUTC+9No
SydneyUTC+10Yes, UTC+11 in their summer

Zones that are not whole hours

Not every offset is a round number. India runs at UTC+5:30, Nepal at UTC+5:45, parts of Australia at UTC+9:30 and Chatham Island at UTC+12:45. Half-hour and quarter-hour offsets are a common source of scheduling errors because people round them away without noticing.

  • UTC is not GMT: they line up in practice, but GMT is a time zone while UTC is a time standard.
  • Abbreviations are ambiguous: CST can mean Central Standard Time, China Standard Time or Cuba Standard Time.
  • The date can change: late-evening calls often land on the following day for the other party.
  • Some countries span several zones: the United States has six, while China uses a single zone across the whole country.
  • DST transition weeks are the risk: for two or three weeks a year the usual gap between two cities is an hour different.

Booking across zones without mistakes

Always write the zone next to the time when you confirm a meeting, and prefer a calendar invite over a message, since the invite carries the zone with it and adjusts on each attendee’s device. When a call sits near a daylight saving changeover, re-check it in the week it happens rather than trusting the difference you memorised.

FAQ

Time zone converter questions, answered

How do I convert a time between two time zones?

Convert the starting time into UTC using its offset, then apply the target zone’s offset. If New York is UTC−4 and London is UTC+1, 09:00 in New York is 13:00 UTC and therefore 14:00 in London. The converter above does this for up to five cities at once, using the correct offset for the date you choose.

What is the time difference between EST and IST?

India is 10 hours and 30 minutes ahead of New York during North American Eastern Standard Time, and 9 hours 30 minutes ahead during Eastern Daylight Time in summer. India does not observe daylight saving, so the gap changes twice a year purely because of the American clock change.

Does this converter handle daylight saving time?

Yes. It uses named zones rather than fixed abbreviations and reads the offset that applies on the specific date you enter, so a meeting scheduled either side of a clock change is converted correctly rather than using today’s offset for every date.

Is UTC the same as GMT?

In everyday use they show the same clock time, but they are not the same kind of thing. GMT is a time zone used by the United Kingdom in winter, while UTC is the global time standard that all zones are defined against. Technical systems and aviation use UTC precisely because it never shifts for daylight saving.

Why do some time zones have half-hour offsets?

Because zone boundaries are political rather than purely geographic. India chose UTC+5:30 as a single national compromise between its eastern and western edges, Nepal uses UTC+5:45, and parts of Australia and Canada use half-hour offsets for similar historical reasons.

What is the best way to schedule a meeting across time zones?

Find the overlap first, then send a calendar invite rather than a plain message, because the invite carries the zone and adjusts on each person’s device. Always state the zone in writing, and rotate awkward slots between teams instead of leaving one region permanently taking calls at night.

Why does my meeting land on a different date?

Because zones can be more than half a day apart. An early-morning call in Los Angeles is the same evening in Europe and already the next day in Sydney or Tokyo. Each city in the result shows a next-day or previous-day flag so the date difference is impossible to miss.

Find a time that works for everyone

Free, private and instant — up to five cities side by side, daylight saving handled, with the working-hours overlap shown at a glance.

Times are calculated from the time zone database on your own device, which is normally kept current by your operating system or browser. Countries occasionally change their offsets or daylight saving rules at short notice, so for legally or commercially critical scheduling, confirm the local time with the other party directly.
