Nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere. Net worth is a snapshot of one moment, and property and vehicle values are estimates until you actually sell, so treat the figure as a tracking tool rather than a valuation.

Why this net worth calculator beats a two-box form

Most net worth calculators ask for total assets and total debts, subtract one from the other, and stop. The subtraction was never the hard part. The useful information is in the composition.

You can see where the wealth sits

A breakdown chart shows what share of your assets is property, retirement, investments, and cash. Two people with identical net worth can be in completely different financial positions.

    Liquid net worth, separately

Home equity is real wealth you cannot spend on Thursday. The liquid figure strips out property and vehicles so you can see what you could actually reach in a hurry.

    Debt-to-asset ratio with context

One percentage that tells you how much of what you own is really financed. It comes with a plain reading of what the number means rather than being left bare.

An optional benchmark, not a lecture

Enter your age and income and it applies the widely cited age-times-income target so you have something to compare against. Leave it blank and the tool never mentions it.

    No lead capture

Plenty of net worth calculators exist to route you to a wealth manager. This one runs entirely in your browser, asks for nothing, and sends nothing anywhere.

    Cash runway included

Add your monthly essentials and it converts your liquid assets into months of cover, which is usually a more urgent number than net worth itself.

How to calculate your net worth accurately

The formula is simple. The accuracy comes entirely from being honest about the inputs, and from valuing things at what they are worth today rather than what you wish they were worth.

    List what you own

Cash, investments, retirement accounts, property, vehicles, and anything else of real value. Use current market value, not purchase price and not the balance from the last statement you happen to remember.

    Value property and cars honestly

Check a recent comparable sale for your home and a trade-in guide for your car. Optimistic valuations here are the single biggest source of inflated net worth figures.

    List every debt in full

Outstanding balances, not monthly payments. Include the credit card you clear each month, any tax owed, and money borrowed from family. Leaving something out defeats the purpose.

    Subtract, then repeat quarterly

Assets minus liabilities is your net worth. The single figure matters far less than the direction of travel, so record it and check again in three months under the same assumptions.

What counts as an asset and what counts as a liability

The most common mistakes are double-counting a house against its mortgage, and treating a financed car as a full asset. Enter the market value on one side and the outstanding balance on the other, and the maths handles the equity for you.

What your net worth number actually tells you

Net worth is the only personal finance metric that captures both sides of the ledger at once. Income tells you what came in, budgets tell you where it went, and net worth tells you what any of it added up to.

    • Whether a good year was actually a good year

A raise that arrived alongside more debt can leave you flat. Net worth catches that; a payslip never will.

    • How exposed you are to one asset

If property is 80% of your assets, your financial life is a bet on one housing market and one illiquid holding.

    • Whether debt paydown or investing wins

Seeing the two columns side by side makes the trade-off concrete instead of theoretical, especially with high-rate balances in view.

    • How long you could actually last

The runway figure turns liquid assets into months of cover, which is the number that matters if income stops unexpectedly.

    • A negative number is information, not a verdict

Negative net worth is normal after a mortgage or a degree. What matters is whether the gap is closing each quarter.

    • A baseline for every other decision

Insurance cover, emergency fund size, and how much risk you can take in a portfolio all follow from this one figure.

    Net worth calculator FAQ

How do you calculate net worth?

Net worth is total assets minus total liabilities. Assets are everything you own that has real market value: cash, investments, retirement accounts, property, and vehicles. Liabilities are everything you owe: mortgage, car loans, student loans, credit card balances, and any other debt.

The formula is trivial. Getting a useful answer depends on valuing property and vehicles at what they would actually sell for today, and on listing every debt rather than the ones you find easiest to think about.

Should I include my house in my net worth?

Yes. Enter the current market value as an asset and the outstanding mortgage balance as a liability. The difference between the two is your home equity, and the calculator arrives at it automatically.

The mistake to avoid is entering only your equity as an asset while also entering the mortgage as a debt, which subtracts it twice. Note that home equity is illiquid, which is exactly why the liquid net worth figure is shown separately.

What is a good net worth for my age?

The most commonly cited rule of thumb multiplies your age by your annual pre-tax income and divides by ten. At 40 earning $80,000, that gives a target of $320,000. This calculator will show that comparison if you fill in the optional benchmark fields.

Treat it loosely. The rule punishes anyone who started earning late, studied for a long time, or lives somewhere expensive, and it flatters high earners who have simply not had time to spend yet. Your own trend line quarter to quarter is a far better guide than any formula.

What is liquid net worth and why does it matter?

Liquid net worth counts only assets you could convert to cash quickly, mainly bank balances and taxable investments, minus unsecured debts such as credit cards. It deliberately excludes property, vehicles, and retirement accounts you cannot access without penalty.

It matters because total net worth can look healthy while you have almost nothing available in an emergency. Someone with substantial home equity and an empty current account is asset-rich and cash-poor, and only the liquid figure exposes that.

    Is negative net worth bad?

Not inherently. It is extremely common in your twenties and thirties, particularly after student loans or a recent mortgage where the balance still exceeds the equity. Debt taken on to buy an appreciating asset or an earning qualification behaves very differently from consumer debt.

What matters is the direction. If the number is less negative every quarter, the plan is working. If it is drifting further down while the debt is on credit cards, that is the signal worth acting on.

How often should I calculate my net worth?

Quarterly suits most people. Monthly tends to be dominated by market noise and by whether you happened to check before or after payday, which encourages reacting to nothing.

Use the same valuation method every time. Changing how you value your house between checks makes the comparison meaningless, and consistency matters more than precision here.

Does my retirement account count toward net worth?

Yes, at its current balance. It is money you own, even though you cannot spend it yet without penalty. For many people in mid-career it is the largest single asset after property.

Bear in mind that a traditional 401(k) or pension balance is pre-tax, so its real spending power is lower than the headline figure once withdrawals are taxed. That is a reason to keep an eye on the liquid figure alongside the total, not a reason to leave it out.

What is a good debt-to-asset ratio?

Below about 50% is generally considered comfortable, and below 30% is strong. Above 100% means you owe more than you own, which is what negative net worth looks like as a ratio.

Context matters a great deal. A recent homebuyer can sit near 80% with a perfectly sound plan, because the balance falls every month while the asset stays. The same ratio built from credit cards and personal loans is a very different situation.

Write the number down and check again in three months

A single net worth figure is just a snapshot. The version of this exercise that changes anything is the one you repeat, because the direction of the line tells you whether the last quarter of decisions actually worked. Fill in the fields, note the result, and come back.
