The conversion in full
Why this height converter is better
Most cm to feet converters give you a decimal like 5.58 feet, which nobody actually says out loud. This one gives you the answer in the form people use, and shows what it means in context.
Feet and inches, not decimals
5 ft 7 in, the way you would say it — with the decimal version kept alongside for forms and spreadsheets that want it.
Every field is live
Type centimetres, drag the slider, or enter feet and inches. Whichever you touch, everything else updates immediately, so it works in both directions without a mode switch.
Actually see the difference
A scaled visual puts your height next to the national average or next to someone else, because “12 cm shorter” means very little as a number on its own.
Fourteen national averages
Compare against adult men or women in the US, UK, Netherlands, Japan, India and more, so the number has a reference point rather than floating free.
Exact, not rounded away
The breakdown shows the unrounded inches as well as the rounded result, so you can see when 170 cm is really 5 ft 6.9 in rather than a clean 5 ft 7 in.
Fast and private
Runs entirely in your browser with no libraries, no requests and no data stored. Nothing you type here leaves the page.

How to convert cm to feet and inches
The whole conversion rests on one fixed number: one inch is exactly 2.54 centimetres. That figure has been defined by international agreement since 1959, so it is exact rather than approximate.
Total inches = cm ÷ 2.54 Feet = whole part of (total inches ÷ 12) Inches = remainderTake 170 cm. Divide by 2.54 and you get 66.93 inches. Divide that by 12 and you get 5.58, so the whole number of feet is 5. Five feet is 60 inches, leaving 6.93 inches — which rounds to 5 ft 7 in.
Going the other way
cm = ((feet × 12) + inches) × 2.54For 5 ft 7 in: five feet is 60 inches, plus 7 makes 67 inches, times 2.54 gives 170.18 cm. Note that this is not exactly 170 — converting back and forth introduces small rounding differences, which is why the calculator shows the precise value as well as the rounded one.
Useful numbers to remember
- 1 foot = 30.48 cm exactly
- 1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly
- 1 metre = 3 ft 3.37 in
- 6 feet = 182.88 cm, so 183 cm is the usual shorthand
- 5 ft 10 in = 177.8 cm
Average height around the world

Your height is not fixed through the day
You are measurably taller in the morning. Spinal discs compress under load as you move around, so most adults lose one to two centimetres between waking and bedtime, and get it back overnight. If you are comparing measurements, take them at the same time of day.
How to measure properly
Stand with your heels, buttocks and shoulders against a wall, feet flat and together, looking straight ahead rather than up. Have someone place a flat object on your head level with the floor and mark the wall underneath it, then measure from the floor to the mark. Shoes off, hair flattened.

Height converter FAQs
How do I convert cm to feet and inches?
Divide the centimetres by 2.54 to get total inches, then divide that by 12. The whole number is your feet, and the remainder is your inches. For 165 cm: 165 ÷ 2.54 = 64.96 inches, which is 5 feet (60 inches) with 4.96 inches left over, so 5 ft 5 in.
How tall is 170 cm in feet?
170 cm is 5 feet 7 inches, or 66.93 inches in total. Strictly it is 5 ft 6.93 in, which rounds up to 5 ft 7 in. Exactly 5 ft 7 in would be 170.18 cm.
How tall is 180 cm in feet?
180 cm is 5 feet 11 inches, or 70.87 inches. People often assume 180 cm is six feet, but six feet is 182.88 cm — nearly three centimetres taller. That is why 183 cm is the figure usually quoted as six foot.
What is 5 foot 7 in cm?
5 ft 7 in is 170.18 cm. Multiply the feet by 12 and add the inches to get 67 total inches, then multiply by 2.54. Most people round this to 170 cm in everyday use.
How many cm are in a foot?
One foot is exactly 30.48 centimetres, and one inch is exactly 2.54 centimetres. These are defined values agreed internationally in 1959, so they are precise rather than approximations.
What is the average height for men and women?
In the United States the average adult man is about 175 cm (5 ft 9 in) and the average adult woman about 161 cm (5 ft 4 in). Averages vary considerably by country — Dutch men average around 180 cm while Indian men average around 167 cm. Use the comparison panel in the calculator to see where you sit against fourteen national averages.
Why does my height change during the day?
The cartilage discs between your vertebrae compress under your own body weight as the day goes on, so most adults measure one to two centimetres shorter in the evening than first thing in the morning. The discs rehydrate overnight and you regain it. For consistency, always measure at the same time of day.
Does converting back and forth give a different number?
Yes, slightly, because feet and inches are a coarser scale. 170 cm converts to 5 ft 6.93 in, which rounds to 5 ft 7 in; convert that back and you get 170.18 cm. The calculator displays the unrounded inches in the breakdown so you can see exactly where the difference comes from.
