Truck and storage suggestions include a 15% packing allowance and use typical rental capacities. Check exact sizes with your provider.
Most cubic footage calculators solve one box in one unit. This one handles the messy, real-world version of the job.
Measure length in feet, width in inches and depth in centimetres. Each side converts on its own, so you never convert by hand.
Switch shapes for rooms and cartons, round tanks and planters, or balls and globe lights without leaving the page.
Add every box, sofa or room to a named list. The running total updates instantly, and you can remove items at any time.
See which moving truck or storage unit size fits your total, with a built-in allowance for real-world packing gaps.
Add a price per cubic foot, yard or metre for materials. For boxes, you also get the dimensional weight couriers bill for.
Every result displays the formula with your numbers in feet, so you can check the maths or copy it straight into a quote.
You will have an answer in under a minute. Here is the quickest route.
Choose Box / room for anything with straight sides. Choose Cylinder for round tanks or tubes, and Sphere for balls.
Type the length, width and height, or the diameter. Then set the unit beside each field. Mixed units are fine.
Use the stepper for identical items, such as 12 moving boxes. Add a price if you are buying soil, mulch or insulation.
The volume in cubic feet updates as you type, along with cubic yards, cubic metres, litres and gallons.
Name the item and tap Add to list. Repeat for every room or piece, then copy the summary to share it.
Cubic feet (ft³) measure how much space something takes up in three dimensions. One cubic foot is a cube 1 foot long, 1 foot wide and 1 foot high. The formula depends on the shape, but the first step is always the same: convert every measurement to feet.
Multiply the three sides together.
Cubic feet = Length × Width × HeightExample: a bedroom 12 ft × 10 ft with an 8 ft ceiling holds 12 × 10 × 8 = 960 cubic feet of air.
Multiply the sides in inches, then divide by 1,728, because one cubic foot holds 12 × 12 × 12 cubic inches.
Cubic feet = (L × W × H in inches) ÷ 1,728Example: a 24 × 18 × 18 in box is 7,776 ÷ 1,728 = 4.5 cubic feet.
Multiply the sides in centimetres and divide by 28,316.85. If you measured in metres, multiply the cubic metres by 35.3147.
ft³ = cm³ ÷ 28,316.85 | ft³ = m³ × 35.3147Example: a 60 × 40 × 40 cm crate is 96,000 cm³, or about 3.39 cubic feet.
For a cylinder, use pi times the radius squared times the height. For a sphere, use four-thirds pi times the radius cubed.
Cylinder = π × r² × h | Sphere = 4/3 × π × r³Example: a round planter 2 ft across and 1.5 ft deep holds π × 1² × 1.5 ≈ 4.71 cubic feet.
Use these factors to convert cubic feet to cubic yards, cubic metres and other volume units.
| 1 cubic foot equals | Value |
|---|---|
| Cubic inches | 1,728 |
| Cubic yards | 0.037037 |
| Cubic metres | 0.0283168 |
| Litres | 28.3168 |
| US gallons | 7.48052 |
| UK (imperial) gallons | 6.22884 |
| Truck or unit | Approx. ft³ |
|---|---|
| Cargo van | 245 |
| 10 ft truck / 5×10 unit | 400 |
| 15 ft truck | 760 |
| 10×10 storage unit | 800 |
| 20 ft truck | 1,015 |
| 26 ft truck | 1,700 |
Storage units assume an 8 ft ceiling. Truck capacities vary by rental company and model.
An accurate volume figure saves money in almost every project. Here is where it pays off most.
Renting too small means two trips. Renting too big wastes money. A cubic foot total removes the guesswork.
Couriers charge by size as well as weight. Knowing the cubic feet and DIM weight of a carton helps you choose cheaper packaging.
Soil, mulch and bagged mixes are sold in cubic feet or yards. Measure once and avoid extra trips or leftover bags.
Fridges, freezers and dehumidifiers list capacity in cubic feet. Room volume also guides air purifier and ventilation choices.
Straight answers to the questions people ask most about cubic feet.
Measure the length, width and height in feet, then multiply them together. For example, 4 ft × 3 ft × 2 ft = 24 cubic feet. If any side is in inches or centimetres, convert it to feet first, or let the calculator do it for you.
Multiply the length, width and height in inches to get cubic inches. Then divide by 1,728. A 20 × 20 × 20 inch box is 8,000 cubic inches, which is about 4.63 cubic feet.
There are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard, because a yard is 3 feet and 3 × 3 × 3 = 27. To convert cubic feet to cubic yards, divide by 27.
Multiply the three sides in centimetres and divide by 28,316.85. If you have cubic metres, multiply by 35.3147. One cubic metre is roughly 35.3 cubic feet.
Halve the diameter to get the radius. Then multiply pi (3.1416) by the radius squared and by the height, all in feet. Choose the Cylinder shape above to do this instantly.
Movers often estimate 150 to 250 cubic feet per furnished room, but homes vary a lot. For a better figure, add your large items and packed boxes to the list above. The tool then suggests a truck and storage unit size.
One cubic foot holds about 7.48 US gallons, 6.23 imperial gallons or 28.32 litres. That makes it easy to check tank, pond or aquarium capacity.
No. Square feet measure a flat area, using two dimensions. Cubic feet measure volume, using three. For floor area, use our square footage calculator instead.
