Why it is better

A PPF calculator that follows the real rules

Most PPF calculators assume one deposit a year and stop at 15 years. This one models how PPF interest actually works, so you can plan deposits, extensions and taxes with confidence.

Yearly or monthly deposits

Model a lump sum every April or a monthly deposit, with the exact interest effect of the 5th-of-the-month rule.

Deposit timing that matters

See how much you lose by paying in March instead of before 5 April. It can cost a full year of interest on that deposit.

5-year extensions

Go beyond 15 years in blocks of five, up to 35 years, with or without fresh deposits during the extension.

Yearly step-up

Raise your deposit by a set percentage each year. The calculator caps it at the ₹1.5 lakh yearly limit for you.

Tax saved and FD equivalent

See your deduction benefit under the old regime and the pre-tax FD rate you would need to match PPF’s tax-free return.

Step by step

How to use the PPF calculator

Results update as you type, so you can compare plans in seconds.

  1. Choose yearly or monthly

Pick Yearly for one deposit a year, or Monthly if you invest a fixed amount every month.

  2. Enter your deposit

Type the amount or drag the slider. PPF allows ₹500 to ₹1,50,000 in each financial year.

  3. Pick the deposit timing

Choose whether you pay before the 5th or later. Early deposits earn interest for longer.

  4. Set the investment period

Keep 15 years, or add 5-year extensions and decide whether to keep investing.

  5. Review tax and real value

Open Advanced to add a step-up, your tax slab and inflation, then check the schedule and chart.

The maths

How PPF interest is calculated

PPF interest is worked out every month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of the month. It is credited once a year, on 31 March, and then earns interest itself. In short, PPF compounds yearly.

F = P × [((1 + i)n − 1) ÷ i] × (1 + i)
  • F Maturity value
  • P Yearly deposit, made before 5 April
  • i Interest rate as a decimal (7.1% = 0.071)
  • n Number of years

Worked example

You invest ₹1,50,000 before 5 April every year for 15 years at 7.1%. You put in ₹22,50,000 and your PPF grows to ₹40,68,209. That includes ₹18,18,209 of interest, and all of it is tax-free.

Why the 5th of the month matters

A deposit made on or before the 5th counts for that month’s interest. Miss it, and the money earns nothing until the next month. With the same ₹1,50,000 a year paid in March instead of early April, the 15-year value drops to ₹37,98,515. That is ₹2,69,695 less, just from timing.

PPF tax benefits and how PPF compares with an FD

PPF is one of the few investments with EEE status. Your deposits can cut your taxable income, and both the interest and the maturity amount are completely tax-free. That is why a 7.1% PPF return often beats a higher FD rate.

Rates can change. The government reviews the PPF rate every quarter. This calculator applies one rate to the whole period, so treat long-term results as estimates.

  • Deduction on deposits: under the old tax regime, deposits up to ₹1,50,000 a year qualify for the deduction commonly known as Section 80C, shared with other eligible investments.
  • New tax regime: there is no deduction on deposits, but interest and maturity stay tax-free.
  • Tax-free interest: unlike FD interest, PPF interest is never added to your taxable income, and no TDS applies.
  • FD equivalent: at the 30% slab plus cess, a 7.1% tax-free return equals about 10.3% from a taxable FD.
  • Safety: PPF is backed by the Government of India, so both your money and the interest are secure.

FAQ

PPF calculator FAQs

Straight answers to the most common questions about PPF returns and rules.

How is PPF interest calculated?

PPF interest is calculated every month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of the month. The total is credited once a year on 31 March, so PPF effectively compounds yearly.

What is the current PPF interest rate?

The PPF rate is 7.1% a year for the July to September 2026 quarter. It has stayed at 7.1% since April 2020, and the government reviews it every quarter.

What will ₹1.5 lakh a year in PPF become after 15 years?

At 7.1%, depositing ₹1,50,000 before 5 April every year for 15 years grows to about ₹40,68,209. You invest ₹22,50,000 and earn about ₹18,18,209 of tax-free interest.

Is PPF interest tax-free?

Yes. PPF has EEE status, so the interest and the maturity amount are fully tax-free. Deposits up to ₹1,50,000 a year can also be deducted from taxable income under the old tax regime, but not under the new regime.

Can I extend my PPF account after 15 years?

Yes. You can extend a PPF account in blocks of 5 years as many times as you like, with or without fresh deposits. To keep depositing, you must apply for the extension within one year of maturity.

When can I withdraw money from PPF?

Partial withdrawals are allowed once a year from year 7. Loans against PPF are available from year 3 to year 6. Premature closure is only allowed after 5 years for specific reasons such as serious illness or higher education.

Is it better to invest in PPF monthly or yearly?

A single deposit before 5 April earns the most, because the whole amount earns interest for the full year. Monthly deposits made on or before the 5th come close, and they suit people who prefer to invest from salary.

What are the minimum and maximum PPF deposits?

You must deposit at least ₹500 and can deposit up to ₹1,50,000 in each financial year. Any amount above the limit earns no interest and gives no tax benefit.
