Most SWP calculators assume you withdraw the same amount forever. Real expenses rise every year, so this tool plans for that and tells you exactly when the money would run out.

Inflation step-up

Raise your withdrawal by a set percentage each year, so your income keeps its buying power.

How long it lasts

If withdrawals are too high, the tool shows the exact year and month your corpus runs out.

Safe withdrawal finder

Find the highest amount you can withdraw for your chosen period, with or without keeping your capital intact.

Monthly, quarterly or yearly

Match the withdrawal frequency your fund house offers and see the effect instantly.

Interactive chart and schedule

Hover the chart for any year, and check the table for yearly withdrawals, returns and balance.

How it works

How Is SWP Calculated?

With a systematic withdrawal plan, you invest a lump sum in a mutual fund and redeem a fixed amount at regular intervals. Meanwhile, the money that stays invested keeps earning returns.

Each month, the calculator grows your balance by the monthly equivalent of your yearly return and then subtracts your withdrawal. If you choose a step-up, the withdrawal rises once a year.

Worked example

Suppose you invest ₹10 lakh at an expected return of 8% a year and withdraw ₹10,000 a month for 10 years. You receive ₹12 lakh in total, earn about ₹5.58 lakh in returns, and still have roughly ₹3.58 lakh left at the end.

Why the step-up matters

A fixed withdrawal loses value as prices rise. For instance, ₹30,000 today may buy far less in 15 years. A yearly step-up protects your lifestyle, although it uses up the corpus faster.

SWP formula

Balance = Balance × (1 + r) − W

  • r: monthly rate, equal to (1 + yearly return)^(1/12) − 1.
  • W: withdrawal for the period, raised by the step-up once a year.
  • Repeat: for every month of the plan, or until the balance reaches zero.
  • Returns earned: final balance + total withdrawn − corpus.
  • Withdrawal rate: first-year withdrawals ÷ corpus.

What Is a Safe Withdrawal Rate?

Your withdrawal rate is the share of your corpus you take out in the first year. The lower it is, the longer your money is likely to last.

Many planners treat 4% to 6% a year as a cautious starting range for long retirements. However, the right rate depends on your returns, inflation, time horizon and other income. Use the Safe withdrawal mode to test your own numbers.

Remember: market returns are not fixed. A few bad years early in retirement can shorten how long your money lasts, so keep some buffer.

Tax

How Is SWP Taxed?

Each SWP payment is a redemption of fund units. Only the gain part of each redemption is taxed, not the whole amount, which often makes SWP more tax-efficient than interest income.

The tax rate depends on the fund type and how long you held the units. Equity funds and debt funds are taxed differently, so check the current capital gains rules or ask a tax adviser.

Also, some funds charge an exit load on early redemptions. Therefore, start an SWP after the exit load period where possible.

FAQ

SWP Calculator FAQs

Answers to common questions about systematic withdrawal plans.

What is an SWP calculator?

An SWP calculator estimates how your mutual fund investment changes when you withdraw a fixed amount at regular intervals. It shows the final balance, total withdrawals, returns earned and whether the money lasts for your chosen period.

How is SWP calculated?

Each period, the remaining balance earns returns and then the withdrawal is subtracted. The calculator repeats this for every month of the plan, raising the withdrawal once a year if you add a step-up.

How much can I withdraw monthly from ₹50 lakh?

It depends on returns, time and inflation. At a 10% return over 20 years, about ₹30,000 a month rising 5% a year still leaves a balance. Use the Safe withdrawal mode to find the exact maximum for your inputs.

Is SWP better than a fixed deposit for regular income?

SWP from a mutual fund can offer higher long-term returns and better tax treatment, because only the gain in each withdrawal is taxed. However, returns are not guaranteed, while FD interest is fixed. Many retirees use both.

What is a good SWP withdrawal rate?

For long retirements, a first-year withdrawal of about 4% to 6% of the corpus is often treated as cautious. Higher rates can work for shorter periods, but they increase the risk of running out.

Should I use a step-up in my SWP?

A step-up raises your withdrawal each year so your income keeps pace with inflation. It is useful for retirement income, but it uses the corpus faster, so test it in the calculator first.

Which mutual funds are best for SWP?

Many investors use balanced advantage, hybrid or conservative funds for SWP because they aim for steadier returns. The right choice depends on your risk appetite and time horizon, so consider speaking to a financial adviser.

Can I stop or change my SWP?

Yes. Most fund houses let you stop, pause or change the amount and frequency of an SWP by submitting a request online or through your distributor.
