Why this calculator

A smarter way to calculate income tax online

Most tax calculators make you click through five screens and still hide the maths. This one shows everything on a single screen, updated as you type.

Old vs new regime, live

Both regimes are calculated together, with a clear verdict on which one costs less and by exactly how much.

Personal break-even point

See the exact deduction amount at which the old regime starts winning for your salary, not a generic rule of thumb.

HRA worked out for you

Enter basic pay, HRA and rent. The exemption is calculated with the three-way rule and metro or non-metro limits.

Rebate, relief and surcharge

Handles the ₹60,000 rebate, marginal relief just above ₹12 lakh, surcharge with relief, and 4% cess.

Slab-wise breakdown

Every rupee is traced: deductions, taxable income, tax per slab, rebate, cess and the final amount payable.

Private by design

No sign-up, no PAN, no data stored. The calculation runs entirely in your browser on any phone or laptop.

How to use

How to calculate your income tax in 5 steps

Keep your payslip or Form 16 handy. The whole process takes under a minute.

  1. 1

    Choose your age group

Seniors (60 to 79) and super seniors (80+) get a higher basic exemption under the old regime. The new regime is the same for all ages.

  2. 2

    Enter salary and other income

Add your annual gross salary and any interest, rental or freelance income. The standard deduction is applied automatically.

  3. 3

Fill in basic pay, HRA and rent

These set your HRA exemption and employer NPS limit. Tick the metro box if you live in one of the eight metro cities.

  4. 4

    Add your deductions

Enter 80C, 80D, NPS, home loan interest and professional tax. They only reduce tax under the old regime, and limits are applied for you.

  5. 5

    Compare and choose

Read the verdict, check the break-even point and open the breakdown. Copy the summary to share with your employer or CA.

Income tax slabs for FY 2026-27 (AY 2027-28)

Standard deduction is ₹75,000 in the new regime and ₹50,000 in the old. A 4% health and education cess applies to tax plus surcharge. Surcharge is 10% above ₹50 lakh, 15% above ₹1 crore and 25% above ₹2 crore, rising to 37% above ₹5 crore in the old regime only.

Worked example

Income tax on a ₹15 lakh salary

A salaried employee below 60 earning ₹15 lakh, with ₹1.5 lakh in 80C and ₹25,000 in 80D, and no HRA.

New regime

  • Gross salary₹15,00,000
  • Standard deduction− ₹75,000
  • Taxable income₹14,25,000
  • Slab tax (0 + 20,000 + 40,000 + 33,750)₹93,750
  • Cess at 4%₹3,750
  • Total tax₹97,500

Old regime

  • Gross salary₹15,00,000
  • Standard deduction + 80C + 80D− ₹2,25,000
  • Taxable income₹12,75,000
  • Slab tax (12,500 + 1,00,000 + 82,500)₹1,95,000
  • Cess at 4%₹7,800
  • Total tax₹2,02,800

Result: the new regime saves ₹1,05,300 a year here. For a salaried person, income up to ₹12.75 lakh is tax-free under the new regime, because the ₹75,000 standard deduction brings taxable income down to the ₹12 lakh rebate limit.

Benefits

Why calculate your tax before the year starts

  • Declare the right regime to your employer

Your choice at the start of the year decides monthly TDS. Choosing well keeps more money in every payslip.

  • Invest only when it actually saves tax

If the new regime wins, tax-saving products lose their tax edge. Invest for returns and liquidity instead.

  • Plan salary negotiations and hikes

Test a new CTC to see the real in-hand effect of crossing a slab or the ₹12 lakh rebate limit.

  • Avoid surprises at ITR time

Knowing your liability early helps you pay advance tax on other income and avoid interest for shortfalls.

FAQ

Income tax calculator FAQs

How is income tax calculated for FY 2026-27?

Start with gross income, subtract the standard deduction and any eligible exemptions and deductions to get taxable income. Apply the slab rates of your chosen regime, subtract the Section 87A rebate if eligible, add surcharge on high incomes, then add 4% health and education cess.

Is income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free in the new regime?

Yes. Resident individuals with taxable income up to ₹12 lakh pay no tax because of the rebate of up to ₹60,000. Salaried taxpayers also get the ₹75,000 standard deduction, so a salary of up to ₹12.75 lakh is effectively tax-free.

Which is better, the old or the new tax regime?

It depends on your deductions. The new regime has lower rates but allows almost no deductions. The old regime only wins when your HRA exemption, 80C, 80D, NPS and home loan interest together exceed a break-even amount, which this calculator works out for your exact salary.

What deductions are allowed under the new tax regime?

The main ones are the ₹75,000 standard deduction for salaried employees and pensioners and the employer's NPS contribution under 80CCD(2), up to 14% of basic salary. Deductions such as 80C, 80D, HRA and interest on a self-occupied home loan are not available.

What is marginal relief in the new regime?

If your taxable income is slightly above ₹12 lakh, marginal relief caps your tax at the amount by which income exceeds ₹12 lakh. For example, on ₹12,25,000 taxable income the tax before cess is ₹25,000 instead of ₹63,750.

Did Budget 2026 change the income tax slabs?

No. Budget 2026 kept the slab rates unchanged for FY 2026-27 under both regimes. The Income-tax Act, 2025, which took effect on 1 April 2026, renumbered many sections but kept the same rates, rebate and standard deduction.

Can I switch between the old and new regime every year?

Salaried individuals without business income can choose a regime every year when filing their return. Taxpayers with business or professional income can switch back to the new regime only once, so compare carefully before opting out.

Is this income tax calculator accurate for filing my return?

It follows the FY 2026-27 slabs, rebate, surcharge and cess rules for resident individuals, so it is ideal for planning and regime selection. Special-rate income such as capital gains is not included, so confirm final figures on the Income Tax Department portal or with a tax professional before filing.
