Recipe ScalerResize Any Recipe and Convert Its Units
Cook for two or for twenty without doing the maths. Paste an ingredient list, set the servings you need, and this recipe scaler multiplies every quantity, tidies awkward measurements like 12 teaspoons into cups, and can switch the whole recipe to metric or US units. It also converts cake pan sizes and oven temperatures.
- Paste and scale instantly
- Metric ↔ US units
- Pan size converter
- Oven temperatures
Works with 1 1/2, 1½, 0.5 and ranges like 2-3. Lines without a number are kept as they are.

Fan ovens circulate hot air, so recipes usually lower the temperature by about 20°C. Always check your oven manual.
How to scale a recipe
Every ingredient is multiplied by the same scaling factor. Divide the servings you need by the servings the recipe makes. For example, to turn a recipe for 4 into one for 6, the factor is 6 ÷ 4 = 1.5, so 2 cups of flour becomes 3 cups.
The tricky part is the result. Multiplying 1 tablespoon by 4 gives 4 tablespoons, which is easier to measure as ¼ cup. Therefore, the recipe scaler rounds to measurable fractions and moves amounts into the most practical spoon or cup.
| US measure | Equals | Metric |
|---|---|---|
| 1 tablespoon | 3 teaspoons | 14.8 ml |
| ¼ cup | 4 tablespoons | 59 ml |
| ⅓ cup | 5 tbsp + 1 tsp | 79 ml |
| ½ cup | 8 tablespoons | 118 ml |
| 1 cup | 16 tablespoons | 237 ml |
| 1 ounce | weight | 28.35 g |
| 1 pound | 16 ounces | 453.6 g |
| Gas mark | °F | °C | Fan °C |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 275 | 140 | 120 |
| 2 | 300 | 150 | 130 |
| 3 | 325 | 170 | 150 |
| 4 | 350 | 180 | 160 |
| 5 | 375 | 190 | 170 |
| 6 | 400 | 200 | 180 |
| 7 | 425 | 220 | 200 |
| 8 | 450 | 230 | 210 |

Cake pan size conversion chart
When you bake in a different pan, scale the recipe by the ratio of the pan areas. A 9 × 13 inch pan holds almost twice as much batter as an 8 inch square pan.
| Pan | Area | Compared with 8 in square |
|---|---|---|
| 8 in round (20 cm) | 50 sq in | 0.79× |
| 9 in round (23 cm) | 64 sq in | 1.0× |
| 8 in square (20 cm) | 64 sq in | 1.0× |
| 10 in round (25 cm) | 79 sq in | 1.23× |
| 9 in square (23 cm) | 81 sq in | 1.27× |
| 9 × 13 in (23 × 33 cm) | 117 sq in | 1.83× |
Keep the batter depth similar. A deeper pan needs a lower temperature or a longer bake, so check with a skewer.
More than a recipe multiplier
Most recipe converters make you type each ingredient into a separate box. Here you paste the whole list and get a clean, measurable recipe back.
Paste the whole recipe
Reads mixed numbers, fractions like ½, decimals and ranges, and leaves notes untouched.
Measurable results
Rounds to fractions you can actually measure and moves teaspoons up to tablespoons or cups.
Metric or US units
Switch the whole recipe between grams and millilitres or cups, ounces and pounds.
Pan size converter
Baking in a different tin? Get the exact factor and send it straight to the recipe.
Oven temperatures
Convert between Celsius, Fahrenheit, fan ovens and gas marks in one step.
Smart cooking notes
Helpful reminders for eggs, leavening, salt and cooking times when you scale up or down.
How to use the recipe scaler
Paste ingredients
Copy the ingredient list from any recipe and paste it in, one ingredient per line.
Set servings
Enter how many the recipe serves and how many you need, or tap a quick multiplier.
Pick units
Keep the original units, or switch everything to metric or US cups.
Copy and cook
Copy the scaled recipe, then check the notes on timing and seasoning.

Tips for scaling recipes successfully
Season to taste
Salt, spices and chilli do not always scale perfectly. Add about three quarters, then taste and adjust.
Weigh for baking
Grams are more accurate than cups, especially for flour. Weighing makes scaled bakes far more reliable.
Handle part eggs
For half an egg, beat one egg and use about half of it, or roughly 25 g.
Watch the timing
Cooking time does not scale with quantity. Larger batches take longer, so check early and often.
Mind your pans
A doubled recipe may need two pans rather than one deeper pan so it bakes evenly.

Recipe scaler FAQs
How do I scale a recipe up or down?
Divide the number of servings you want by the number the recipe makes to get a scaling factor, then multiply every ingredient by it. To make 6 servings from a recipe for 4, multiply everything by 1.5.
How do I halve 1/3 cup?
Half of 1/3 cup is 1/6 cup, which equals 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons, or about 39 ml.
How many tablespoons are in a cup?
There are 16 tablespoons in one US cup, and 3 teaspoons in one tablespoon, so a cup holds 48 teaspoons.
Does cooking time change when I double a recipe?
Usually it increases, but not twice as much. Thicker batters, bigger roasts and fuller pots take longer. Check early and use visual cues or a thermometer rather than the original time.
Can I scale baking recipes?
Yes, most cakes, cookies and breads scale well, especially if you weigh ingredients. Very large changes can affect rising, so you may need to adjust pan size and baking time.
How do I convert a 9x13 recipe to an 8x8 pan?
A 9 by 13 inch pan has an area of 117 square inches and an 8 inch square pan has 64, so multiply the recipe by about 0.55, or roughly halve it.
What is a fan oven temperature?
A fan oven circulates hot air, so it cooks faster than a conventional oven. Most recipes lower the temperature by about 20 degrees Celsius for a fan oven, for example 180°C becomes 160°C fan.
How do I scale eggs in a recipe?
Round to the nearest whole egg when you can. For a half egg, beat one egg and use about half, which is roughly 25 grams for a large egg.
