Your cat
Lifestyle
Lifestyle does not change the human-age conversion — a three-year-old cat is 28 either way. It changes the typical lifespan used for the progress bar, because road traffic, predators, fights and infectious disease shorten outdoor life expectancy considerably.
Cats do not age seven years for every one of ours
A one-year-old cat has finished growing, is sexually mature and hunts like an adult. That is nothing like a seven-year-old child — it is closer to a fifteen-year-old. Cats front-load their ageing in the first two years, then settle into a steady four human years for each calendar year.
The vet chart, not folklore
Year one counts for 15, year two brings the total to 24, and every year after adds four. That is the conversion your vet uses, and it is what this calculator applies.
Kitten months matter most
The first year is the steepest part of the curve, and a six-month kitten is already around ten. Enter months and get a real number instead of waiting for a birthday.
Indoor and outdoor lifespans
Lifestyle does not change the conversion but it changes life expectancy sharply. The progress bar uses the range that actually applies to your cat.
Life stage, not just a number
Kitten, young adult, mature adult or senior decides how often your vet wants to see them and what they screen for. The stage is shown with the age.
The next five birthdays
See what each upcoming year converts to, so the jump into the senior bracket is not a surprise at a routine appointment.

How to use the cat age calculator
- Enter the birthday or the age
With a date of birth you also get the exact age in years, months and days and a countdown to the next birthday. For a rescue or stray with an estimated age, switch to the age tab.
- Choose the lifestyle
Indoor only, indoor with outdoor access, or fully outdoor. This sets the life expectancy range behind the progress bar.
- Read the human age
The headline figure is the standard veterinary conversion. The life stage badge underneath is the part that changes how you care for them.
- Watch for the senior line
From about ten years, most vets move to twice-yearly checks with blood pressure, kidney values and thyroid screening. Cats hide illness well, so the schedule matters more than the symptoms.

Feline life stages and what changes
Stages follow the AAFP and AAHA feline life stage guidelines, which vets use to set screening schedules.
| Stage | Cat age | Human equivalent | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kitten | Birth to 1 year | 0 to 15 | Vaccinations, neutering, rapid growth, kitten food |
| Young adult | 1 to 6 years | 15 to 40 | Annual checks, weight and dental watch |
| Mature adult | 7 to 10 years | 44 to 56 | Baseline bloodwork, early kidney and thyroid signs |
| Senior | 10 years and over | 56 and up | Twice-yearly exams, blood pressure, arthritis checks |
Typical life expectancy varies enormously with lifestyle.
| Lifestyle | Typical lifespan | Main risks |
|---|---|---|
| Indoor only | 13 to 17 years | Obesity, dental disease, kidney disease |
| Indoor with outdoor access | 10 to 13 years | Traffic, fights, infectious disease |
| Outdoor or farm cat | 5 to 10 years | Traffic, predators, poisons, untreated illness |
Why the real number is worth knowing
- ✓Cats hide illness. It is a survival instinct. Scheduled screening at the right life stage catches kidney and thyroid disease long before you would notice anything.
- ✓Food that matches the stage. Kitten, adult and senior formulas differ in calories, protein and phosphorus. Feeding the wrong one for years has consequences.
- ✓Dental disease is the quiet one. A majority of cats show dental disease by their mature adult years, and it is painful long before it is obvious.
- ✓Weight is the lever you control. Keeping a cat lean is one of the few things reliably linked to a longer, more comfortable life.
- ✓Behaviour makes sense in context. A cat at the human equivalent of seventy sleeping more and jumping less is normal ageing, not necessarily a problem — but stiffness is worth mentioning.
- ✓Insurance thresholds. Premiums and exclusions shift at senior ages that arrive earlier than most owners expect.
Cat age calculator FAQs
Is one cat year equal to seven human years?
No. The seven-year rule is a rough average that is wrong at both ends. A one-year-old cat is roughly 15 in human terms rather than 7, and a fifteen-year-old cat is about 76 rather than 105. Cats age fastest in their first two years and then settle to about four human years per calendar year.
How old is a 1 year old cat in human years?
About 15. At twelve months a cat has finished most of its growth, has adult teeth and is sexually mature, which lines up far better with a human teenager than with a young child. By two years old the total reaches 24.
How old is a 10 year old cat in human years?
Around 56. That is 24 for the first two years, plus four for each of the following eight. Ten is also the point at which most vets classify a cat as senior and move to twice-yearly examinations.
How old is a 6 month old kitten in human years?
Roughly 10 in human terms. Kittens develop very fast: three months is about 4, six months about 10, and seven months about 12. This is also the window when neutering is usually recommended, before sexual maturity at around seven to nine months.
When is a cat considered a senior?
From about ten years old under current AAFP and AAHA guidance, which replaced the older habit of splitting senior and geriatric at fifteen. Reaching the senior stage is the trigger for twice-yearly checks, blood pressure measurement, kidney and thyroid screening and a closer look at joints and teeth.
How long do cats live?
Indoor-only cats typically live 13 to 17 years and reaching the early twenties is not unusual. Cats with outdoor access average roughly 10 to 13, and fully outdoor or farm cats considerably less, largely because of traffic, fights, predators and untreated illness rather than faster biological ageing.
Do indoor cats age more slowly than outdoor cats?
No. The conversion is identical, so a three-year-old is 28 whether it lives indoors or out. What differs is how likely the cat is to reach each stage at all. An outdoor cat is not ageing faster, it is facing a much higher chance of dying young.
How do I estimate the age of a stray or rescue cat?
Vets look at teeth first: kittens have all their adult teeth by around seven months, tartar accumulates through the middle years and heavy wear or missing teeth suggests a senior. Coat texture, muscle tone and cloudiness or fibre changes in the iris add further evidence. Ask for an estimate at the first appointment, then use the age tab here.
