There is no single national formula in India. Each board or university converts CGPA based on how its own grading scale was designed, so the same CGPA can give different percentages.
The best-known rule comes from CBSE, which multiplies CGPA by 9.5. CBSE based this factor on the average marks of students scoring in the top grade band. Many universities that follow the UGC grading pattern use the same multiplier.
Suppose your CGPA is 8.2. Under the CBSE rule, 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.9%. With a direct × 10 rule, it becomes 82%. Under VTU's older rule, (8.2 − 0.75) × 10 gives 74.5%.
To go the other way, reverse the formula. For the CBSE rule, divide your percentage by 9.5. For example, 76% ÷ 9.5 = 8.0 CGPA.
Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
| Formula | Often used by | CGPA 8.0 |
|---|---|---|
| CGPA × 9.5 | CBSE, UGC pattern | 76% |
| CGPA × 10 | Anna University, KTU, VTU 2021+ | 80% |
| (CGPA − 0.5) × 10 | GTU, JNTUH | 75% |
| (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 | VTU 2015 to 2018 schemes | 72.5% |
| 7.1 × CGPA + 11 | Mumbai University | 67.8% |
Use this chart for a quick check. It compares the CBSE rule with the direct × 10 rule for common CGPA values.
| CGPA | CBSE (× 9.5) | Direct (× 10) |
|---|---|---|
| 10.0 | 95% | 100% |
| 9.5 | 90.25% | 95% |
| 9.0 | 85.5% | 90% |
| 8.5 | 80.75% | 85% |
| 8.0 | 76% | 80% |
| 7.5 | 71.25% | 75% |
| 7.0 | 66.5% | 70% |
| 6.5 | 61.75% | 65% |
| 6.0 | 57% | 60% |
| 5.0 | 47.5% | 50% |
Important: universities sometimes change their rule between regulations or schemes. Always confirm the formula printed on your grade card or in your university's official circular.
SGPA is your grade point average for a single semester. CGPA is the combined average of all semesters you have completed so far.
Most universities weight each semester by its credits. So CGPA = sum of (SGPA × credits) ÷ total credits. If every semester has the same credits, CGPA is simply the average of your SGPAs.
Many Indian universities award classes by percentage. A common pattern is 75% and above for first class with distinction, 60% to 74.99% for first class and 50% to 59.99% for second class.
Rules differ, however. Some universities set class directly on CGPA, so check your own regulations before quoting a class on a form.
Answers to the questions students ask most when converting grades.
Use the formula your board or university publishes. For CBSE and many UGC-pattern universities, multiply CGPA by 9.5. For example, a CGPA of 8.0 equals 76%. Other universities use rules such as CGPA × 10 or (CGPA − 0.75) × 10.
CBSE derived 9.5 from the average marks of students in the top grade band over several years. It is an indicative factor, which is why other boards and universities use different multipliers.
Under the CBSE rule, 8.5 CGPA is 80.75%. With a direct × 10 rule it is 85%, and under VTU's older (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 rule it is 77.5%. Select your formula in the calculator to get the right value.
Reverse your formula. For the CBSE rule, divide the percentage by 9.5, so 76% ÷ 9.5 = 8.0 CGPA. Choose % to CGPA in the calculator to reverse any listed formula.
Anna University is commonly reported to use CGPA × 10, so 8.0 CGPA equals 80%. Some older regulations and affiliated colleges may follow a different rule, so confirm with your grade card or the university's circular.
Multiply each semester's SGPA by its credits, add the results and divide by the total credits. If all semesters carry equal credits, CGPA is just the average of your SGPAs.
A simple estimate is GPA ÷ 4 × 100, so a 3.2 GPA is about 80%. Universities abroad may use their own tables, so use this only as a guide.
Under the CBSE rule, 7 CGPA is 66.5%, which usually falls in first class (60% or more). Some universities award class directly on CGPA, so check your own regulations.
One wrong multiplier can cost you an interview shortlist. Use the CGPA to percentage calculator with your university's rule before you submit any form.
