Why it is better

An FD calculator built for real Indian deposits

Most FD calculators stop at a single number. This one shows how your deposit really behaves: when it matures, what the bank pays out, how much TDS may be cut and what you keep after tax.

Every payout type

Cumulative FDs plus monthly, quarterly, half-yearly and yearly payout FDs, using the discounted monthly rate banks actually apply.

Bank-accurate compounding

Quarterly compounding by default, simple interest for tenures under six months, and a switch for monthly, half-yearly or yearly.

Years, months and days

Enter an exact tenure such as 1 year 3 months 10 days and see the precise maturity date for your start date.

Senior citizen rate

Add the extra rate your bank offers seniors and instantly see the higher maturity value and the higher TDS limit.

TDS and post-tax returns

Estimate TDS with or without PAN, then see the interest you keep after income tax at your slab, including cess.

Schedule and comparison

A year-by-year table of balance and interest, plus a side-by-side comparison of every compounding and payout option.

Step by step

How to use the FD calculator

It takes under a minute. Every result updates as you type, so you can test ideas quickly.

  1. Enter the deposit amount

Type the amount or drag the slider. The value in lakh or crore appears above the field, so you never miss a zero.

  2. Add the interest rate

Use the rate your bank quotes for your tenure. Switch on Senior citizen to add the extra rate.

  3. Set the tenure

Enter years, months and days, or tap a quick option such as 1 yr or 5 yrs.

  4. Choose how interest is paid

Pick At maturity for a cumulative FD, or choose a monthly, quarterly, half-yearly or yearly payout.

  5. Review and compare

Check the maturity amount, TDS and post-tax interest. Then open Compare options to test other choices.

The maths

How FD interest is calculated

Banks in India calculate fixed deposit interest with compound interest, usually added every quarter. The FD calculator uses the same method, so your result lines up with what your bank quotes.

A = P × (1 + r/n)n × t
  • A Maturity amount
  • P Principal, the amount you deposit
  • r Annual interest rate as a decimal (7% = 0.07)
  • n Compounding periods a year (4 for quarterly)
  • t Tenure in years

Worked example

You deposit ₹1,00,000 for 5 years at 7%, compounded quarterly. The quarterly rate is 1.75%, applied 20 times. So A = 1,00,000 × (1.0175)20 = ₹1,41,478, and your interest is ₹41,478.

Short deposits and payout FDs

For tenures under six months, most banks pay simple interest: P × r × t. For payout FDs, the quarterly payout is P × r ÷ 4. Monthly payouts use a slightly lower, discounted rate because you receive the money earlier. On ₹10,00,000 at 7%, that is about ₹5,800 a month rather than ₹5,833.

Tax & TDS

TDS and tax on FD interest

FD interest is fully taxable. It is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate each year, even if you do not withdraw it. The calculator shows this as post-tax interest, including the 4% health and education cess.

Estimates only. TDS is worked out per bank and per financial year, so actual deductions depend on when interest is credited and on your other deposits with the same bank.

  • TDS threshold: banks deduct TDS when your FD interest with one bank crosses ₹50,000 in a financial year, or ₹1,00,000 for senior citizens (limits applying from FY 2025-26).
  • TDS rate: 10% if your PAN is linked with the bank, and 20% if it is not.
  • TDS is not an extra tax: it is adjusted against your final tax when you file your return, and any excess is refunded.
  • No taxable income? Submit the bank’s self-declaration form (traditionally Form 15G, or Form 15H for seniors) at the start of each year to avoid TDS.
  • Tax-saver FD: a 5-year tax-saver FD can reduce your taxable income under the old tax regime, but it cannot be withdrawn early.
Benefits

Benefits of using an FD calculator

A few seconds of planning can decide which bank, tenure and payout option earns you the most.

Plan with certainty

Know the exact amount and the date you will receive it, so you can match an FD to a goal such as school fees or a down payment.

Compare banks in seconds

Change only the rate to see what a 0.25% difference is worth over your full tenure.

Pick the right payout

See how much regular income a monthly payout gives compared with the extra growth of a cumulative FD.

See your real return

Tax and inflation both shrink what your money can buy. The calculator shows both, so you judge an FD on its real value.

FAQ

FD calculator FAQs

Quick answers to the questions people ask most about fixed deposit returns.

How is FD interest calculated?

Most Indian banks compound FD interest every quarter using A = P × (1 + r/n)^(n × t), where n is 4. For tenures under six months, banks usually pay simple interest instead. This FD calculator applies both rules automatically.

What is the maturity amount of ₹1 lakh in an FD for 5 years at 7%?

With quarterly compounding, ₹1,00,000 at 7% for 5 years grows to about ₹1,41,478. That is ₹41,478 of interest before tax.

Is FD interest taxable in India?

Yes. FD interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate. Banks deduct 10% TDS (20% without PAN) when interest with one bank crosses ₹50,000 in a financial year, or ₹1,00,000 for senior citizens.

Which is better, a cumulative or a non-cumulative FD?

A cumulative FD earns more because interest is reinvested and compounds. A non-cumulative FD pays interest monthly, quarterly, half-yearly or yearly, which suits people who need regular income. Use the Compare options tab to see the difference for your deposit.

Why is the monthly payout lower than the quarterly payout divided by three?

Banks compound FD interest quarterly. When you choose monthly payouts, you get money earlier, so the bank pays a slightly discounted monthly rate. On ₹10 lakh at 7%, the monthly payout is about ₹5,800 instead of ₹5,833.

How much extra interest do senior citizens get on FDs?

Most banks pay senior citizens 0.25% to 0.50% more than the regular rate, and some special schemes pay more. Switch on Senior citizen in the calculator and enter the extra rate your bank offers.

Can I withdraw an FD before maturity?

Yes, most FDs allow premature withdrawal. The bank usually pays the rate for the period you actually held the deposit, minus a penalty of around 0.5% to 1%. Tax-saver FDs cannot be broken before their 5-year lock-in.

Is money in a bank FD safe?

Bank deposits are insured by DICGC up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank, covering principal and interest together. Spreading large amounts across banks keeps more of your money within this cover.
