    The method

How to calculate your life path number by hand

Your life path number comes from your full date of birth. In the standard method, you reduce the month, day and year to single digits separately, then add them and reduce the total again. Master numbers 11, 22 and 33 are never reduced along the way.

Step 1 Reduce month, day and year to one digit each
Step 2 Keep 11, 22 or 33 if they appear
Step 3 Add the three results together
Step 4 Add the digits of the total until you reach 1 to 9, 11, 22 or 33

    Worked example: July 24, 1990

    Month: July
    7
    Day: 24
    2 + 4 = 6
    Year: 1990
    19 → 10 → 1
    Total
    7 + 6 + 1 = 14
    Life path number
    1 + 4 = 5

    Because the total passes through 14, numerologists would write this as 14/5, a karmic debt number. The single-sum method gives the same answer: 7 + 2 + 4 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 32, and 3 + 2 = 5.

Master number example: November 29, 1987

    Month: November
    11 (kept)
    Day: 29
    2 + 9 = 11 (kept)
    Year: 1987
    25 → 7
    Total
    11 + 11 + 7 = 29
    Life path number
    2 + 9 = 11

    Karmic debt numbers 13, 14, 16 and 19

When a total reduces through one of these numbers, numerology treats it as a lesson carried into this life. 13 points to hard work and focus, 14 to self-control and moderation, 16 to humility and rebuilding, and 19 to independence balanced with asking for help.

Numerology letter chart for name numbers

Name numbers use the Pythagorean chart below. Your Expression (Destiny) number uses every letter of your birth name, your Soul Urge (Heart's Desire) number uses only the vowels, and your Personality number uses only the consonants.

    ABCDEFGHI
    JKLMNOPQR
    STUVWXYZ

    For example, JOHN is 1 + 6 + 8 + 5 = 20, which reduces to an Expression number of 2. The only vowel, O, gives a Soul Urge of 6, and the consonants J, H and N give 1 + 8 + 5 = 14, a Personality number of 5.

    FAQ

    Life path number FAQs

Clear answers to the questions people ask most about numerology numbers.

Your life path number is the single digit, or master number 11, 22 or 33, you get by reducing your full date of birth. For example, someone born on July 24, 1990 has life path 5, because 7 + 6 + 1 = 14 and 1 + 4 = 5.

Reduce the month, day and year to single digits separately, keeping 11, 22 and 33. Add the three results, then add the digits of the total until you reach 1 to 9 or a master number. For November 29, 1987, that is 11 + 11 + 7 = 29, and 2 + 9 = 11.

Master numbers are double digits that numerologists do not reduce, because they are believed to carry extra potential and extra pressure. 11 is linked with intuition, 22 with building big things and 33 with teaching and healing.

If a total passes through 13, 14, 16 or 19 on the way to your final number, numerologists call it a karmic debt number. It points to a lesson to work on, such as discipline for 13 or self-control for 14. This calculator flags it automatically.

A common approach groups the numbers into 1, 5 and 7 (independent thinkers), 2, 4 and 8 (practical builders) and 3, 6 and 9 (creative hearts). Numbers in the same group tend to match naturally, and some pairs across groups, such as 1 and 3 or 2 and 6, also work well.

Your life path number comes from your birth date and describes your path and life lessons. Your expression or destiny number comes from the letters of your full birth name and describes your natural talents and how you express them.

Some add every digit of the date at once instead of reducing the month, day and year first. The two methods often agree, but the results can differ, especially when master numbers are involved. This calculator shows both so you can compare.

No. Your life path number is fixed by your date of birth. Name-based numbers like Expression and Soul Urge can change if you use a different name, which is why numerologists use your full birth name.

No. There is no scientific evidence that numbers predict personality or the future. Many people enjoy numerology as a tool for reflection and conversation, and that is the best way to use these results.
