The formulas

How to calculate mileage

Mileage, or fuel efficiency, is the distance a vehicle travels on one unit of fuel. In India it is usually shown as kilometers per litre. Divide the distance by the fuel used, and you have it.

Mileage

km/l = distance (km) ÷ fuel (litres)

Full-tank method

km/l = (reading 2 − reading 1) ÷ litres refilled

Cost per km

₹/km = fuel price ÷ km/l

L per 100 km

L/100 km = 100 ÷ km/l

US MPG

MPG (US) = km/l × 2.352

UK MPG

MPG (UK) = km/l × 2.825

Example: a car that covers 462 km and takes 30.5 litres to refill gives 462 ÷ 30.5 = 15.15 km/l. At ₹102 per litre, that is about ₹6.73 per km.

Quick reference

Fuel efficiency conversion chart

Car reviews and owner forums use different units. Use this chart to compare km per litre with litres per 100 km and miles per gallon.

km / lL / 100 kmMPG (US)MPG (UK)
1010.023.528.2
156.735.342.4
205.047.056.5
254.058.870.6
402.594.1113.0
601.7141.1169.5

A higher km/l or MPG means better efficiency. A lower L/100 km means better efficiency.

Why use this tool

More than a fuel efficiency calculator

Most mileage calculators divide two numbers and stop. This one tracks real-world mileage over time and helps you decide what to drive next.

Live mileage gauge

An animated dial scaled for bikes, cars, SUVs or trucks shows where your mileage sits.

Fill-up log

Record several fill-ups to see average, best and worst mileage, plus a trend chart.

Petrol vs CNG vs EV

Compare cost per km, yearly spend, total cost and break-even time across three fuels.

Every unit

Work in km and litres, miles and US or UK gallons, and read results in all four efficiency units.

Range per tank

Add your tank size to see how far a full tank should take you at your real mileage.

CO₂ per year

See the approximate carbon dioxide from each option, based on fuel burned or grid power used.

Step by step

How to check your vehicle's real mileage

  1. Fill to the brim

Fill the tank until the nozzle clicks off, and note the odometer reading.

  2. Drive normally

Use the vehicle as usual until the tank is about a quarter full or lower.

  3. Refill and note

Fill again at the same pump to the click, and note the litres added and the new reading.

  4. Enter the numbers

Type both readings and the litres into the calculator to get your real km per litre.

Tips to improve your mileage

  • Keep tyres inflated

Under-inflated tyres increase rolling resistance. Check pressure every couple of weeks when the tyres are cold.

  • Drive smoothly

Gentle acceleration and early braking use far less fuel than stop-start driving.

  • Hold a steady speed

Most vehicles are most efficient at moderate, steady speeds in a high gear.

  • Service on time

Clean air filters, fresh oil and correct wheel alignment all help the engine work efficiently.

  • Cut extra weight

Remove roof racks and heavy items you do not need. Extra load and drag reduce mileage.

  • Avoid long idling

Switch off the engine during long waits instead of idling with the AC on.

FAQ

Mileage calculator FAQs

How do I calculate the mileage of my bike or car?

Use the full-tank method. Fill the tank to the auto cut-off and note the odometer. Drive normally, then fill to the cut-off again and note the litres added and the new reading. Divide the distance travelled by the litres added to get km per litre.

Why is my real mileage lower than the claimed figure?

Official mileage figures come from standard laboratory tests. Real driving adds traffic, idling, air conditioning, extra load, tyre pressure and road conditions, so real-world mileage is usually lower.

How do I convert km per litre to litres per 100 km?

Divide 100 by the km per litre figure. For example, 20 km per litre equals 100 divided by 20, which is 5 litres per 100 km.

How do I convert km per litre to MPG?

Multiply km per litre by 2.352 for US miles per gallon, or by 2.825 for UK miles per gallon. So 15 km per litre is about 35.3 US MPG or 42.4 UK MPG.

How do I calculate fuel cost per km?

Divide the fuel price by your mileage. At 102 rupees per litre and 15 km per litre, the cost is about 6.80 rupees per km.

Is an electric car cheaper to run than petrol?

Per kilometre, charging at home usually costs much less than petrol. Whether an EV is cheaper overall depends on its higher purchase price and how far you drive. The Petrol vs EV tab shows the break-even time for your numbers.

How accurate is the full-tank method?

One fill-up gives a good estimate, but averaging three or more fill-ups is more accurate. Always fill at the same pump and stop at the first automatic click.

Does AC reduce mileage?

Yes. The air conditioning compressor takes power from the engine, so mileage drops, especially in slow city traffic. The effect is smaller at steady highway speeds.
