Why this typing test is better to practise on
A typing test should measure your speed, not your patience with pop ups. This one starts the moment you press a key and shows every mistake as you make it.
Instant start
No countdown, no start button and no account. Click the text, type the first letter and the clock is already running.
Live error highlighting
Every character turns green or red as you type it, and extra letters are struck through, so you learn the mistake immediately rather than at the end.
Punctuation and numbers
Turn either on to practise the keys that slow most people down. Real work is full of commas, full stops and figures.
Four test lengths
Fifteen seconds for a quick burst, or two minutes if you want a score that reflects real sustained speed rather than a sprint.
Net and raw speed
Raw WPM counts everything you typed, net WPM counts only what was correct. The gap between them is your real practice target.
Phone friendly
The test works with a mobile keyboard, so you can measure thumb typing as well as a full keyboard.
How the typing speed test works
Choose a length
Thirty seconds is the usual benchmark. Sixty seconds gives a steadier reading because a single stumble matters less.
Start typing
Click the text and type what you see. The timer starts on your first keystroke, and space moves you to the next word.
Keep going through mistakes
You can backspace within the current word, but chasing every error costs more time than it saves. Accuracy above ninety five percent is the goal.
Read your result
When the timer ends you get net WPM, raw WPM, accuracy and correct characters, plus where your score sits against typical speeds.
What counts as a good typing speed?
Words per minute is measured in standard words of five characters, including the space. That is why a WPM score is not the same as counting real words, and why every test on the internet uses the same five character rule.
| Speed | Level | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Under 25 WPM | Beginner | Mostly hunt and peck, eyes on the keyboard |
| 25 to 39 WPM | Developing | Some touch typing, still looking down often |
| 40 to 54 WPM | Average adult | Comfortable for everyday email and documents |
| 55 to 74 WPM | Fast | Above the bar for most admin and support roles |
| 75 to 94 WPM | Professional | Typing keeps up with thinking, rarely a bottleneck |
| 95 WPM and above | Expert | Transcription level, roughly the top few percent |
Most office jobs that list a requirement ask for forty to sixty WPM. Data entry and transcription roles often want sixty five or more with accuracy above ninety eight percent, because a fast typist who makes errors creates work rather than saving it.
How to type faster
- Fix accuracy before speed. Every mistake costs two keystrokes to undo. Slowing down by ten percent to type cleanly usually raises net WPM.
- Stop looking at the keyboard. It feels slower for about a week, then it is permanently faster. Cover your hands if you cannot resist.
- Keep your fingers on the home row. Index fingers on F and J, and return to that anchor after every reach.
- Practise the keys you actually miss. For most people that is punctuation, capitals and numbers, which is why both toggles are here.
- Short daily sessions beat long ones. Ten focused minutes a day moves your score faster than an hour once a week.
- Sit properly. Wrists floating, elbows near ninety degrees, screen at eye level. Comfort is what lets you sustain speed for more than a minute.
