How it works
How to convert military time
Standard time to military time
- For times from 1:00 AM to 11:59 AM, remove the colon and add a leading zero if needed. 7:30 AM is
0730. - For 12:00 PM to 12:59 PM, just remove the colon. 12:15 PM is
1215. - For 1:00 PM to 11:59 PM, add 12 to the hour. 4:20 PM is
1620. - For 12:00 AM to 12:59 AM, the hour becomes 00. 12:10 AM is
0010.
Military time to standard time
- From
0100to1159, add a colon, drop the leading zero and add AM. - From
1200to1259, add a colon and PM. - From
1300to2359, subtract 12 from the hour and add PM. - From
0000to0059, the hour is 12 AM.
How to say military time
Say the hours and minutes as two numbers and end with “hours”. 1545 is “fifteen forty-five hours”. When the minutes are 00, say “hundred”: 1900 is “nineteen hundred hours”.
A leading zero is spoken as “zero”, never “oh”, in military use. 0730 is “zero seven thirty hours”.
Is midnight 0000 or 2400?
Both are used. 0000 marks the start of a day and 2400 the end of the same day, so a shift that ends at midnight often ends at 2400. Many systems only use 0000.
Where military time is used
The armed forces, aviation, hospitals, emergency services, police and many countries in daily life use the 24-hour clock because it removes any AM and PM confusion. Converting between time zones? Try our time zone converter.

Military time converter FAQs
What is military time?
Military time is the 24-hour clock written without a colon. The day runs from 0000 at midnight to 2359, one minute before the next midnight, so there is no need for AM or PM.
How do I convert PM times to military time?
Add 12 to the hour and remove the colon. For example, 2:30 PM becomes 1430 and 9:45 PM becomes 2145. The only exception is 12 PM (noon), which stays as 1200.
What is 1700 in military time?
1700 is 5:00 PM. Subtract 12 from any military hour of 13 or more to get the PM hour.
How do you say 0800 in military time?
It is said as “zero eight hundred hours”. Military time uses “zero” for a leading 0 and “hundred” when the minutes are 00.
Is midnight 0000 or 2400?
Midnight is 0000 at the start of a day. 2400 is sometimes used for midnight at the end of a day, for example when a shift ends at midnight. Both refer to the same moment.
What is Zulu time?
Zulu time is the military name for Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). It is written with a Z after the time, such as 1400Z, so people in different time zones refer to the same clock.
Is 12:30 AM 0030 in military time?
Yes. Any time between midnight and 1 AM uses 00 for the hour, so 12:30 AM is 0030.
What is the difference between military time and the 24-hour clock?
They use the same hours. The 24-hour clock is usually written with a colon, like 15:45, while military time drops the colon, like 1545, and is often followed by the word hours.
Does military time use seconds?
Usually not. Military time normally shows hours and minutes only. When seconds are needed, they are added after a colon, such as 1545:30.
