The method

How business days are calculated

A business day, or working day, is any day that is not a weekend day or a public holiday. To count them, list every date in the range, remove the weekend days, then remove holidays that fall on the remaining weekdays.

Adding business days works the other way. Start from a date, move forward one day at a time, and count only the days that are working days until you reach the number you need.

Business days vs calendar days

Contracts, notice periods and delivery promises often say “business days”. Ten business days is usually two full weeks, or 14 calendar days, and longer if a holiday falls in between.

Weekends around the world

Most countries rest on Saturday and Sunday. Many Middle Eastern countries use Friday and Saturday, and some businesses in India work six days a week with only Sunday off. Indian banks close on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month.

Need calendar days instead? Use our date calculator.

Business day formula

Business days = Calendar days − Weekend days − Weekday holidays

In Excel or Google Sheets:

=NETWORKDAYS(A2, B2, Holidays)=NETWORKDAYS.INTL(A2, B2, 11, Holidays)

The 11 means only Sunday is a weekend. Use WORKDAY.INTL to add business days to a date.

Answers

Business days calculator FAQs

How do I calculate business days between two dates?

Count all the days in the range, subtract the weekend days, then subtract any public holidays that fall on weekdays. This calculator does it for you and lets you choose whether the start and end dates count.

How many business days are in a year?

With Saturday and Sunday weekends, most years have 260 or 261 weekdays. 2026 has 261. Subtract your public holidays to get the number of working days.

How many business days is 2 weeks?

Two weeks is 10 business days with a Monday-to-Friday week, or fewer if a public holiday falls in that time.

Are Saturdays business days?

Usually not. In most countries business days are Monday to Friday. Some businesses in India work on Saturdays, and Indian banks close only on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays.

Does the count include the start and end dates?

You can choose. By default both dates are counted, which matches the NETWORKDAYS function in Excel. Untick either box to leave that date out.

How do I add business days to a date?

Choose Add or subtract days, pick a start date and enter the number of business days. The calculator skips weekends and holidays and shows the resulting date. The start date itself is not counted.

Which holidays are included for India?

The national holidays: Republic Day on 26 January, Independence Day on 15 August and Gandhi Jayanti on 2 October. Festival and state holidays change every year, so add the ones you follow as extra days off.

How are US federal holidays handled when they fall on a weekend?

A holiday that falls on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before, and one on a Sunday is observed on the Monday after. The calculator uses these observed dates.

How do I count business days in Excel?

Use =NETWORKDAYS(start, end, holidays) for a Monday-to-Friday week, or =NETWORKDAYS.INTL(start, end, weekend, holidays) for other weekends. Use WORKDAY or WORKDAY.INTL to add business days to a date.
