Why it's better

Why this random team generator is better

Picking teams by hand takes time and someone always ends up picked last. This tool makes fair teams instantly and gives you the options coaches and teachers actually need.

Truly random and even

Names are shuffled with a cryptographically secure random function, and team sizes never differ by more than one person.

Balanced by skill

Add a rating after any name and players are drafted snake-style, then fine-tuned so every team's total skill is as close as possible.

Teams or group size

Choose how many teams you want, or how many people per group, including pairs. Odd numbers are handled sensibly.

Captains and team names

Pick a captain for every team and name teams by color, animal, number, letter or your own custom names.

Copy, print or share

Copy teams as text, download a CSV for spreadsheets, print a clean list or send a link that recreates your setup.

Private and remembered

Your name list is saved only in this browser, so your class or squad is ready next time without typing it again.

Team sizes

How uneven numbers are split

When names don't divide evenly, extra people are spread one per team so sizes never differ by more than one.

In People per team mode, the tool picks the number of groups that keeps every group closest to your chosen size, so nobody is left in a group on their own.

How balanced teams are made

With skill balancing on, players are ranked by their rating and drafted in a snake order: first to last, then last to first. That stops one team getting every top pick.

The tool then tries swaps between the strongest and weakest teams until the totals are as close as they can be, and shows each team's total and average so everyone can see it is fair.

  • Rate everyone on the same scale, for example 1 to 10.
  • Keep ratings rough; ties are fine and are shuffled randomly.
  • Turn on captains to make the strongest player in each team the captain.
  • Leave ratings off entirely for a purely random split.
  • Press Shuffle again for a different, equally balanced line-up.

FAQ

Random team generator FAQ

How does the random team generator work?

Enter names, choose the number of teams or people per team and press Generate. Names are shuffled with a cryptographically secure random function and dealt out so team sizes differ by at most one.

Can I make balanced teams by skill level?

Yes. Add a skill level after each name, like Priya: 8 or Arjun (5), and keep Balance by skill on. Players are drafted in a snake order and swapped until team totals are as close as possible.

What happens if names don't divide evenly?

Extra people are spread across teams one at a time, so no team has more than one person more than another. For example, 23 people in 4 teams become 6, 6, 6 and 5.

Can I split a class into pairs or small groups?

Yes. Choose People per team and set it to 2 for pairs, or any size for groups. With an odd number of people, one group gets an extra person instead of anyone being left alone.

Can I pick team captains?

Yes. Turn on Pick a captain and one player in each team is marked with a star. With skill balancing, the highest-rated player becomes captain; otherwise the captain is chosen at random.

Is my list of names saved?

Your names are saved only in this browser so they are there next time. Nothing is uploaded. Use Share link to send your list and settings to someone else.

How many names can I add?

Up to 500 names and up to 50 teams at a time, which covers everything from a small squad to a whole school year.

Can I choose my own team names?

Yes. Choose colors, animals, numbers or letters, or select My own names and type your team names separated by commas.

Is the team picker truly random?

Yes. Shuffles use crypto.getRandomValues, the random source used for security, so every arrangement is equally likely and results can't be predicted.
