Features

Why This VAT Calculator Is Better

Most VAT tools only handle one country and two sums. This one covers more ground and still gives you the answer as you type.

Three calculations in one

Add VAT, remove VAT, or find the rate between a net price and a gross price. The third option is rare, yet it is handy for checking receipts.

27 countries built in

Pick the UK, Ireland, Germany, France, the UAE, South Africa and more. The standard and reduced rates load as one-tap buttons with the right currency.

The working is shown

Every result comes with the sum behind it. Therefore you can copy the method onto an invoice note or check it by hand.

Rates side by side

A small table shows the same amount at every rate for that country. As a result, you can compare the standard and reduced rates at a glance.

Copy any figure

Copy the net, the VAT or the gross on its own, or copy the full breakdown in one tap. Then paste it into a quote or your accounts.

Private and instant

All sums run in your browser, so your prices are never uploaded. There is no sign-up and no button to press.

Step by step

How to Use the VAT Calculator

The answer updates as you type, so most sums take a few seconds.

  1. Choose what to do

    Select Add VAT if your price does not include tax. Select Remove VAT if it does. Use Find rate when you know both prices.

  2. Enter the amount

    Type the price in the box. You can include commas, and the label tells you whether it should be the net or the gross figure.

  3. Pick a country or rate

    Choose a country to load its rates, then tap the one you need. Otherwise, type any rate from 0 to 100 percent.

  4. Read and copy the result

    The net, VAT and gross amounts appear on the right with the working below. Finally, copy a single figure or the whole breakdown.

The formulas

How to Calculate VAT by Hand

Two short formulas cover almost every VAT sum. The examples use the UK standard rate of 20%.

Adding VAT to a net price

VAT = net × rate ÷ 100
gross = net + VAT

For example, 100 net at 20% gives 20 of VAT and a gross price of 120. A quick way is to multiply the net price by 1.2.

Removing VAT from a gross price

net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
VAT = gross − net

For example, 120 gross at 20% gives 100 net and 20 of VAT. At 20% the VAT is also exactly one sixth of the gross price.

The common mistake. Taking 20% off a gross price does not remove the VAT. Twenty percent of 120 is 24, but the VAT inside 120 is only 20. Always divide by 1 plus the rate instead.

Governments change VAT rates from time to time, and many items are exempt or zero-rated. Confirm the rate with the national tax authority before you issue an invoice. For India, use the GST calculator, and for the United States use the sales tax calculator.

Benefits

What People Use a VAT Calculator For

Working out VAT in your head is easy to get wrong, especially in reverse. A VAT calculator removes the doubt in these everyday jobs.

Writing invoices and quotes

Add VAT to your net price and show both figures clearly. Afterwards, build the document with the invoice generator.

Checking receipts

Remove VAT from a till receipt to see the net cost and the tax you paid. This matters when you reclaim VAT on business expenses.

Setting shop prices

Start from the shelf price you want and work back to the net amount you keep. Then check your margin with the profit margin calculator.

Selling across borders

Online sellers often charge the VAT rate of the buyer's country. Switch country to see what the same product costs in each market.

Spotting the wrong rate

If a bill looks odd, enter the net and gross amounts in Find rate. The tool shows the rate that was really charged.

Budgeting a purchase

Suppliers often quote prices without VAT. Add it before you compare offers, so the total does not surprise you later.

FAQ

VAT Calculator Questions and Answers

How do I add VAT to a price?

Multiply the net price by the VAT rate to get the VAT, then add it to the net price. At 20%, a net price of 100 has 20 of VAT, so the gross price is 120. In the VAT calculator, choose Add VAT and type the net price.

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate. At 20% you divide by 1.2, so a gross price of 120 becomes 100 net with 20 of VAT. Choose Remove VAT in the calculator and it does this for you.

What is the VAT rate in the UK?

The standard UK VAT rate is 20%. A reduced rate of 5% applies to some goods and services, such as home energy and children's car seats. A zero rate applies to most food, books and children's clothing.

How do I work out the VAT inside a total at 20%?

Divide the total by 6. Because 20 out of every 120 is VAT, the tax is exactly one sixth of a gross price at the 20% rate. For example, a total of 60 contains 10 of VAT.

What is the difference between net and gross?

The net price is the amount before VAT, which is what the seller keeps. The gross price is the amount including VAT, which is what the customer pays. The difference between the two is the VAT itself.

How do I find the VAT rate from two prices?

Subtract the net price from the gross price, divide the answer by the net price and multiply by 100. For example, 120 minus 100 is 20, and 20 divided by 100 is 20%. The Find rate option does the same sum.

Is VAT the same as GST or sales tax?

VAT and GST work the same way, and only the name differs between countries. Sales tax is different, because it is charged once at the final sale instead of at each stage. However, the sums for adding and removing the tax are identical.

When do I have to register for VAT in the UK?

You must register when your taxable turnover goes over 90,000 pounds in any rolling 12 months. You can also register voluntarily below that level. Thresholds change, so check the current figure on the government website.
