Keyboard Tester: Check Every Key Online

Press any key and watch it light up. This keyboard tester shows which keys work, measures how many keys register at once (rollover), flags key chatter on mechanical keyboards, and shows the key code for every press.

  • Full, TKL and compact layouts
  • Rollover (NKRO) test
  • Key chatter detection
  • Key codes and history

Keys are captured only while the keyboard is active. Click outside it, or press Esc three times quickly, to stop.

Why it is different

Why this keyboard tester is better

Basic testers only colour a key when you press it. This one also measures rollover and chatter, the two things that matter most for gaming and mechanical keyboards.

Three layouts

Switch between full size, tenkeyless and laptop layouts so the progress count matches the keyboard you own.

Rollover test

Hold several keys together and see the most that registered at once, to check for ghosting and NKRO support.

Chatter detection

Worn switches can register one press twice. Keys that bounce within a few milliseconds get a red dot.

Key codes for developers

Every press shows key, code, keyCode and location, so you can check left and right modifiers and numpad keys.

History and extra keys

See your recent keys, plus any keys that are not on the layout, such as media keys or extra international keys.

Safe and private

Nothing you type is sent or saved. Keys are only captured while the test area is active.

How to use

How to test your keyboard online

A full check takes about two minutes.

  1. Pick your layout

Choose full size, tenkeyless or laptop so the key count matches your keyboard.

  2. Start testing

Press Start testing or click the keyboard. It glows when it is ready to capture keys.

  3. Press every key

Each key lights up while held and stays amber once it works. Keys that never light up may be faulty.

  4. Test rollover

Hold several keys at once, such as W, A, S, D and Shift, and check the Max at once result.

Explained

Key rollover and ghosting explained

Rollover is how many keys your keyboard can register at the same time. Ghosting is when extra or missing keys appear because the keyboard cannot tell which keys are pressed.

RolloverKeys at onceTypical keyboards
2KRO2 keysVery basic and older office keyboards
Limited3 to 5 keys, depending on the keysMost laptop and membrane keyboards
6KRO6 keys plus modifiersMany USB gaming keyboards
NKROEvery keyMost mechanical and high-end gaming keyboards

Keys a browser may not detect

  • Fn is handled inside the keyboard and never reaches the browser.
  • Print Screen may register only when released.
  • Windows or Command shortcuts can be taken over by the system.
  • Media keys may control your player instead and appear under extra keys, if at all.

If a key does not work

  • Clean it. Remove dust or crumbs with compressed air.
  • Reconnect. Try another USB port, or re-pair a wireless keyboard and check its battery.
  • Check settings. Turn off Filter Keys or Sticky Keys on Windows and check your layout.
  • Update drivers or the keyboard firmware from the maker's website.
FAQ

Keyboard tester FAQs

How do I test my keyboard online?

Press Start testing, then press each key. Working keys light up and stay amber. Any key that never lights up may be faulty or blocked by your system.

Is this keyboard tester safe?

Yes. Nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere. Keys are only captured while the test area is active, and everything runs in your browser.

How do I check for ghosting or NKRO?

Hold down several keys at the same time and watch Max at once. If it stops at 2 to 6, your keyboard has limited rollover. If every key you hold registers, it supports NKRO.

What is key chatter?

Chatter is when one press registers twice because a worn or dirty switch bounces. The tester flags a key if it is pressed again within 35 milliseconds of being released.

Why does the Fn key not light up?

The Fn key is handled inside the keyboard itself and is not sent to the computer, so no website can detect it. Test it by pressing Fn with another key and checking the result.

Can I test a laptop keyboard?

Yes. Choose Laptop / compact so the count matches your keys. Some laptop keys, like media or brightness keys, may be handled by the system and not show up.

Does it work with wireless and Bluetooth keyboards?

Yes. Any keyboard your computer recognises works, including wireless, Bluetooth and mechanical keyboards.

How do I stop testing?

Click anywhere outside the keyboard, or press Escape three times quickly. Your results stay on screen until you press Reset.
