Speed trainer

Great for building speed on a tricky passage: start slow and let the metronome push you up.

Why it is different

Why this online metronome is better

Many web metronomes drift or only offer a basic click. This one uses precise audio scheduling and gives you the practice tools musicians actually need.

Rock-steady timing

Clicks are scheduled on the audio clock, not screen timers, so the beat stays even at any tempo.

Subdivisions and accents

Hear eighths, triplets or sixteenths, and set every beat to accent, normal or silent for complex patterns.

Speed trainer

Let the tempo rise automatically every few bars up to a target, the proven way to build speed cleanly.

Tap tempo

Tap along to a song and the metronome finds its BPM, then shows the classical tempo marking.

Five sounds

Choose click, woodblock, beep, hi-hat or cowbell, whichever cuts through your instrument best.

13 time signatures

From 2/4 and 3/4 to 7/8 and 12/8, with a bar counter and practice timer to track your session.

Tempo markings and BPM

Italian tempo markings describe speed in sheet music. The metronome shows the matching marking as you change the BPM.

MarkingApproximate BPMMeaning
Largo40 to 60Very slow and broad
Adagio66 to 76Slow and relaxed
Andante76 to 108At a walking pace
Moderato108 to 120Moderate speed
Allegro120 to 156Fast and lively
Vivace156 to 176Very lively
Presto168 to 200Very fast

How to practise with a metronome

  • Start slow at a tempo where you can play every note cleanly.
  • Speed up in small steps of 2 to 5 BPM once it feels easy.
  • Put the click on 2 and 4 to build a strong feel for groove.
  • Record yourself to hear where you rush or drag.

Time signatures in brief

The top number is how many beats are in a bar, and the bottom number is which note gets the beat. 4/4 has four quarter-note beats, 3/4 gives a waltz feel, and 6/8 groups six eighth notes into two strong pulses.

FAQ

Online metronome FAQs

Is this online metronome accurate?

Yes. Each click is scheduled ahead on the browser's audio clock, which is far steadier than normal timers, so the beat stays even even if the page is busy.

How do I find the BPM of a song?

Press Tap tempo, or the T key, in time with the beat for four or more taps. The metronome averages your taps and sets the BPM for you.

What BPM should I practise at?

Start at a tempo where you can play without mistakes, often 60 to 80 BPM for new material. Increase it by a few BPM at a time, or use the speed trainer to do it for you.

How do I accent the first beat?

The first beat is accented by default. Click any beat dot to cycle between accent, normal and silent, so you can create any pattern you like.

How do I practise with the click on 2 and 4?

Choose 4/4, then click beats 1 and 3 until they are silent. Leave beats 2 and 4 on, which is how many jazz and pop players practise.

Does the metronome work on my phone?

Yes. It works in modern mobile browsers. On iPhone, turn off the silent switch so you can hear the clicks, and keep the screen on while you practise.

What is the speed trainer?

The speed trainer raises the tempo by a set amount every few bars until it reaches your target BPM. It helps you build speed gradually without stopping to adjust.

Is the metronome free?

Yes. It is completely free with no download, sign-up or ads inside the tool.
