Why it is different

Why this webcam test is better

Most webcam checkers just show a preview. This one measures what your camera actually delivers and helps you look your best on calls.

Real resolution

See the exact resolution your camera sends, and the maximum it supports, not just what the box claims.

Measured frame rate

Frames per second are counted live, so you can spot a choppy camera caused by low light or a slow USB port.

Lighting check

The tool reads your picture brightness and tells you if the room is too dark or too bright for a clear image.

Snapshot and clip

Take a full-resolution snapshot or record a 10-second clip with sound, then play it back or download it.

Mirror and grid

Flip the preview like a mirror and turn on a thirds grid to line up your eyes and frame your face well.

Private by design

Your video never leaves your device. The camera turns off when you press Stop or close the page.

How to use

How to test your webcam online

It takes about 30 seconds.

  1. Start the test

Press Test my webcam and choose Allow when your browser asks to use the camera.

  2. Check the picture

Look at the live video, then read the resolution, frame rate and lighting results below it.

  3. Try other settings

Pick another camera or a higher quality to see what your webcam can really do.

  4. Snap or record

Take a snapshot or record a short clip to see and hear exactly what others will on a call.

Quality

What webcam resolution and frame rate is good?

For video calls, 720p at 30 fps is enough for most people. Streaming and recording look better at 1080p.

ResolutionPixelsGood for
480p (SD)640 × 480Basic calls on slow connections
720p (HD)1280 × 720Zoom, Teams and Google Meet calls
1080p (Full HD)1920 × 1080Streaming, recording and presentations
4K (Ultra HD)3840 × 2160Professional recording and content creation

Frame rate explained

30 fps looks smooth on calls. 60 fps makes fast movement look fluid. If your frame rate drops below 20 fps, add light or plug the camera into a different USB port, since many webcams slow down in dim rooms.

Tips to look better on video calls

  • Face a window or place a lamp behind your screen, not behind you.
  • Raise the camera to eye level so you look straight ahead.
  • Keep a tidy background and sit about an arm's length away.
  • Clean the lens with a soft cloth to remove haze.
Troubleshooting

Webcam not working? Try these fixes

Most problems come from a blocked permission, another app using the camera, or a closed privacy shutter.

Windows 10 and 11

Allow camera access

Open Settings, then Privacy and security, then Camera. Turn on Camera access and Let apps access your camera. Also check for a camera key or shutter on your laptop.

Mac

Give your browser permission

Open System Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Camera, and switch on your browser. Restart the browser after changing it.

Chrome and Edge

Reset the site permission

Click the icon at the left of the address bar, set Camera to Allow and reload the page.

Unblock the camera

In Firefox, click the permissions icon in the address bar and clear the block. In Safari, open Settings for this website and set Camera to Allow.

FAQ

Webcam test FAQs

How do I check if my webcam is working?

Press Test my webcam and allow camera access. If you see yourself in the preview and the badge says your camera is working, it is fine. Check the resolution and frame rate to judge the quality.

Is this webcam test private?

Yes. The video is shown only in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or recorded to a server, and the camera turns off when you stop the test or leave the page.

Why is my webcam showing a black screen?

A privacy shutter may be closed, another app may be using the camera, or your system may block it. Open the shutter, close other video apps and check the camera permission for your system and browser.

Why is my webcam resolution lower than expected?

Your camera may not support the quality you picked, or a USB 2.0 port or hub may be limiting it. Choose Full HD or 4K in Requested quality and plug the camera directly into your computer.

Why is my frame rate low?

Most webcams slow down in dim light to let in more light. Add a lamp in front of you, close other heavy apps, and try a different USB port.

Why does my video look mirrored?

The preview is mirrored by default, like looking in a mirror, because it feels natural. Others see you unmirrored. Press Mirror to turn it off. Snapshots are always saved unmirrored.

Can I test the camera on my phone?

Yes. Open this page in your mobile browser, allow camera access and pick the front or back camera from the Camera list.

Can I test my microphone too?

Yes. Record a test clip here to hear your audio with the video, or use our dedicated mic test for a live level meter and more detail.
