Why it's better

Why this online voice recorder is better

Most free recorders give you one take, one format and a single button. This one works like a small studio app, so you get cleaner audio and more control without installing anything.

100% private, on-device

Audio is captured and converted inside your browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server, so interviews, notes and personal messages stay yours.

MP3, WAV or original file

Download a small MP3 for sharing, a lossless WAV for editing, or the original WebM or M4A file your browser recorded.

Trim before you download

Cut silence or false starts from the beginning and end on a visual waveform, preview the selection, then save it as a new take.

Live waveform and level meter

See your voice as you speak. The meter shows input level in decibels and warns you the moment you are too loud and starting to clip.

Pause, resume, unlimited takes

Pause mid-sentence and carry on where you stopped. Every take is kept in a list so you can compare them and keep the best one.

Studio-style mic settings

Pick your microphone and switch noise suppression, echo cancellation and auto gain on or off for a natural or a cleaner sound.

How to use

How to record your voice online in 5 steps

No downloads and no account. If you have never used a browser recorder before, this takes about ten seconds.

Tip: test your setup first with our online mic test if you are not sure your microphone is working.

  1. Press the red Record button

Your browser asks for microphone permission. Choose Allow. If you have more than one mic, pick the right one from the Microphone list first.

  2. Speak and watch the level meter

Keep the bar mostly in the green and amber zone. If the Too loud warning appears, move back a little or lower your input volume.

  3. Pause or stop at any time

Press Pause (or the Space bar) to take a break. Press Stop & save when you are done and the take appears under Your recordings.

  4. Listen back and trim

Play the take. Select Trim to remove dead air or false starts, preview the selection, then save the trimmed copy.

  5. Download MP3 or WAV

Rename the file if you like, then choose MP3 for sharing or WAV for editing in Audacity, GarageBand, Premiere or any audio editor.

Formats

MP3 vs WAV vs WebM: which format should you download?

Your browser records in a compressed format (WebM or Ogg in Chrome, Edge and Firefox, M4A in Safari). The voice recorder can convert any take to MP3 or WAV on your device.

FormatQualitySize per minuteBest for
MP3 (128 kbps)Good, compressedAbout 1 MBSharing by email or chat, uploading to most websites, playing on any device
WAV (16-bit PCM)LosslessAbout 5.8 MB (mono, 48 kHz)Editing, podcast production, transcription and voice-over work
WebM / Ogg (Opus)Very good, compressedAbout 1 MBQuick saves in Chrome, Edge and Firefox, web playback
M4A (AAC)Very good, compressedAbout 1 MBSafari on iPhone, iPad and Mac, Apple apps

Rule of thumb: if you plan to edit, download WAV first. You can always convert WAV to MP3 later, but you cannot restore detail that compression has already removed.

Sound better

Tips for a clearer voice recording

A good recording depends more on the room and mic position than on expensive gear. These simple habits make a laptop or phone mic sound noticeably more professional.

  • Stay about a hand's width (15 to 20 cm) from the mic and keep that distance steady.
  • Record in a small room with soft furnishings. Curtains, a sofa or a wardrobe full of clothes absorb echo.
  • Turn off fans, air conditioners and phone notifications before you press Record.
  • Speak slightly across the microphone, not straight into it, to soften popping P and B sounds.
  • A wired headset or USB mic sounds much better than a built-in laptop microphone.
  • Keep noise suppression on for speech; turn it off for singing or instruments so the tone stays natural.
  • Record a 5-second test, listen with headphones, then record the real take.
Benefits

Benefits of an in-browser voice recorder

Recording in your browser skips app stores, installers and accounts, while giving you the same core tools as a desktop audio recorder.

Nothing to install

Open the page and record. It works the same on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, Android and iOS.

Private by design

No account, no cloud storage and no tracking of your audio. Your recordings disappear when you close the tab.

Fast and lightweight

The recorder loads in a moment and runs smoothly even on older phones. The MP3 encoder loads only when you need it.

Free with no catches

No trial, no watermark, no daily cap on recordings or downloads. Record as often and as long as you need.

Popular ways people use it

  • Voice memos and notes
  • Podcast and YouTube voice-overs
  • Song ideas and singing practice
  • Speech and presentation rehearsal
  • Language and pronunciation practice
  • Interviews and lectures (with consent)
  • Voice messages for email or chat
  • Audition and interview answers
Troubleshooting

Microphone not working? Quick fixes

Most recording problems come down to browser permission or the wrong input device. Work through these in order.

Permission was blocked

Click the lock or settings icon to the left of the address bar, set Microphone to Allow and reload. On iPhone go to Settings, Safari, Microphone. On Android Chrome open Site settings, Microphone.

Wrong mic or no sound

Choose the correct device in the Microphone list. On Windows check Settings, System, Sound, Input; on a Mac check System Settings, Sound, Input. Our mic test shows whether the device picks up sound.

Recording sounds distorted

Lower the input volume or move back until the Too loud warning stops. Turning off Auto gain in Recording settings can also help with loud voices.

Another app is using the mic

Close Zoom, Teams, Discord or any other call app, then press Record again. Some systems only let one app use a microphone at a time.

FAQ

Online voice recorder FAQ

Is this online voice recorder really free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark, no daily limit and no paid tier. You can record and download as many takes as you like.

Are my recordings uploaded or saved anywhere?

No. Audio is recorded and converted entirely in your browser using the built-in MediaStream Recording API. Nothing is sent to our server. Recordings are cleared when you close or reload the page, so download the ones you want to keep.

How do I record my voice and save it as MP3?

Press Record, allow microphone access, speak, then press Stop & save. Under Your recordings, click MP3. The file is converted on your device and downloads straight away.

Is there a time limit on recordings?

There is no fixed limit. Recordings are held in your device's memory, so hours of audio are possible on most computers. For very long sessions, stop and download in parts to be safe.

Does the voice recorder work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. It works in Safari on iPhone and iPad (iOS 14.5 or later) and in Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Samsung Internet on Android. Keep the screen on and the tab open while recording.

Why can't the recorder access my microphone?

Usually the browser permission is blocked, another app is using the mic, or no microphone is connected. Allow microphone access from the address bar, close apps like Zoom or Teams, and try again.

Can I record sound playing on my computer?

This tool records from microphones only. Browsers do not let a website capture system audio through the microphone input. To capture computer sound, use a screen recorder that supports tab or system audio.

How do I trim or cut a recording?

Click Trim on any take, drag the Start and End sliders to select the part you want, press Play selection to check it, then click Save trimmed copy. The original take is kept.

Should I download MP3 or WAV?

Choose MP3 for sharing because it is about five times smaller. Choose WAV if you will edit the audio or send it for transcription, because it is lossless.
